Over the past two decades, the rapid development of "Artificial Intelligence" (AI) technology has greatly accelerated the digitalization of the power grid. Against the backdrop of a low-carbon power grid, AI enhances the grid’s ability to predict renewable energy output through big data analysis and machine learning algorithms, optimizes demand-side flexibility resource management, and reduces the risk of power outages through fault prediction and early warnings, thus improving grid security. The application value and potential of AI have garnered significant attention from power companies worldwide. State Grid Corporation of China has set up a strategic consulting project, jointly led by Professor Kang Chongqing from Tsinghua University and Vice President Gao Kunlun from the China Electric Power Research Institute, to specifically study the development path and application route of AI in power systems, aiming to guide the smart transformation of power systems. This special issue invited scholars and engineers from prestigious universities, research institutions, and industries across China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and South Korea to contribute, ultimately assembling 10 high-quality papers. These papers focus on the application of AI in transmission and distribution networks, providing a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of AI's role in enhancing system flexibility, security, and reliability.
Professor Kang Chongqing, Senior Researcher Ricardo Jorge Bessa, and Professor Wang Yi wrote the editorial, analyzing AI’s impact on the enhancement of grid modeling, operation, and control capabilities, with particular attention to data sharing in smart grids and the latest solutions to the resulting data security issues.

Given the rapid development of AI technology and its widespread application across various industries in recent years, Editor-in-Chief Prof. Innocent Kamwa specifically penned an 11-page viewpoint article discussing how power systems can use AI technology to achieve low-carbon and digital transformation.
Message from Editor-in-Chief Prof. Innocent Kamwa
Sir Jim McDonald, President of the Royal Academy of Engineering and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Strathclyde, was invited to contribute a viewpoint article in the special issue, pointing out the importance of data-centric engineering solutions for the zero-carbon transformation of energy systems.
Message from Sir Jim McDonald
The organization of this special issue took nearly two years from inception to publication. Professor Kang Chongqing was invited to organize the special issue in February 2023, and it was officially approved in March. After a month of preparation, the call for papers began in April, and after several months of collecting and screening submissions, the review process started in November. After multiple rounds of review and revisions, all papers for the special issue were accepted in July 2024, and the issue was officially published in November 2024.
It is reported that IEEE Power and Energy Magazine is the flagship magazine of the IEEE Power and Energy Society and is one of the most authoritative and influential magazines in the power and energy field. The magazine covers the latest technological applications in the power and energy sector, with a particular focus on advanced concepts and technological practices related to power and energy, while integrating non-technical issues such as business, environmental, and social concerns. The journal is published bimonthly and publishes a varying number of papers per issue, either in the form of a special issue or regular papers, aimed at helping professionals, even across disciplines, quickly understand the latest technologies in a specific field.
