On July 8, 2023, the inaugural conference of the Special Committee for Electrical Engineering of the Tsinghua University Shanghai Alumni Association, along with the “Summer of Harvesting Days: New-type Power System Technologies and Industrial Development Conference,” was successfully held in Shanghai. The event was graced by the presence of Chen Yujian, Secretary of the Minhang District Committee of the Communist Party of China in Shanghai; Zhao Liang, Standing Committee Member and Deputy District Chief of the Minhang District Committee; Hu Zhihong, Deputy Director of the Hongqiao International Central Business District Management Committee; Jiang Shengyao, Vice President of the Tsinghua Alumni Association; Tang Jie, Secretary-General of the Tsinghua Alumni Association; Qin Weifang, President of the Tsinghua University Shanghai Alumni Association; Su Weimin, Supervisor of the Tsinghua University Shanghai Alumni Association; Kang Chongqing, Dean of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA) at Tsinghua University; and Yu Xinjie, Party Secretary of EEA, among others. Over 200 Tsinghua alumni from local alumni associations such as the Hu’nan Alumni Association and the Tianjin Alumni Association, as well as other departments of Tsinghua University, gathered to reminisce about their alma mater and contribute to the development of both alumni and the university. This event aimed to strengthen connections among EEA alumni, alumni enterprises, the university, and local government, creating a platform for mutual communication and support, thereby facilitating the development of alumni and their enterprises and contributing to the growth of the university’s electrical engineering disciplines. This event received strong support from the Minhang District Government and the EEA Sub-Association of the Tsinghua Alumni Association.

The conference and proceedings were co-hosted by Yu Xinjie (admitted in 1991), Party Secretary of EEA at Tsinghua University, and Ai Qian (admitted in 1994), a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

During the conference, speeches were delivered by several distinguished individuals, including Jiang Shengyao (admitted to the Department of Thermal Engineering in 1979), Vice President of the Tsinghua Alumni Association; Zhou Xiaoxin (admitted in 1959), Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Zhao Liang, Standing Committee Member and Deputy District Chief of the Minhang District Committee; Qin Weifang (admitted to the Department of Precision Instruments in 1984), President of the Tsinghua University Shanghai Alumni Association; and Kang Chongqing (admitted in 1988), Dean of EEA at Tsinghua University, among others.

With the collective presence of distinguished guests and EEA alumni, the Special Committee for Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University Shanghai Alumni Association was formally established, marked by an unveiling ceremony. In attendance were Tang Jie (admitted to the Department of Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering in 1985), Secretary-General of the Tsinghua Alumni Association; Kang Chongqing (admitted in 1988), Dean of EEA at Tsinghua University; Qin Weifang (admitted to the Department of Precision Instruments in 1984), President of the Tsinghua University Shanghai Alumni Association; and Li Canbing (admitted in 1997), Secretary-General of the Special Committee for Electrical Engineering of the Tsinghua University Shanghai Alumni Association, who participated in the unveiling.

During the conference, a strategic cooperation agreement was signed between the Tsinghua Sichuan Energy Internet Research Institute and the Office of South Hongqiao Management Committee in the Minhang District. This event not only marked the establishment of the Special Committee for Electrical Engineering of the Tsinghua University Shanghai Alumni Association but also signaled the collaborative beginning among EEA, Hongqiao Central Business District Management Committee, and the Minhang District Government. Liu Yi (admitted in 1999), Deputy Dean of the Tsinghua Sichuan Energy Internet Research Institute, and Zhang Xiong, Deputy Director of the Office of the South Hongqiao Management Committee and Party Secretary of the South Hongqiao Group, represented both parties during the signing.

Furthermore, during the certificate presentation segment, Kang Chongqing (admitted in 1988), Dean of EEA at Tsinghua University; Guo Liang (admitted in 1981), Dean of the Tsinghua Taiwan Research Institute; Zhuang Yu (admitted in 1985), President of the Tsinghua University Tianjin Alumni Association; Tang Xiaoming (admitted in 1985), Executive Director of the Tsinghua University EEA Alumni Association, presented certificates of appreciation to individuals and companies that supported the establishment of the Elderly Care Fund for EEA. The certificates expressed gratitude for the care and assistance provided to retired faculty members.

In the sharing session, guest speaker Qu Xiaohua (admitted to the Department of Physics in 1981), Chairman of the Board of Canadian Solar Inc., delivered a thematic presentation titled “Fostering Virtue Through Photovoltaics & Striving for Self-improvement”.

Honorary Director Chen Chen (admitted in 1956) and Director Zhou Qing (admitted in 1985) of the Special Committee for Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University Shanghai Alumni Association respectively addressed the audience.

Chen Chen has dedicated over fifty years to the field of power system stability and control, earning recognition in both academia and industry. Since graduating from Tsinghua University, Professor Chen has been a pioneer in the development of domestically-produced large-capacity generator excitation systems. In a video message, she expressed her profound concern for his alma mater and her hopeful expectations for the future of electrical engineering.

The strong bond among alumni and their deep affection for their alma mater were evident throughout the event. The Special Committee for Electrical Engineering of the Tsinghua University Shanghai Alumni Association serves as an inclusive platform, fostering connections among alumni and providing a spiritual home where achievements and joys can be shared, friendship and values can be conveyed, and links with the university and fellow alumni can be maintained. Today, as we gather to rekindle friendships, exchange insights, and chart the course ahead, let this meeting be the beginning of enhanced communication, collaboration, and mutual growth. In conclusion, we extend our best wishes for the continuous advancement and prosperity of the Special Committee for Electrical Engineering of the Tsinghua University Shanghai Alumni Association.

The conference, enriched with specialized content, fostered an enthusiastic atmosphere among participants. Alumni expressed great benefit from the event and expressed a keen anticipation for more similar opportunities for exchange and exploration in the future. With this, the “Summer of Harvesting Days: New-type Power System Technologies and Industrial Development Conference” concluded successfully.
