A few days ago, ITU-T SG5 (the fifth study group of the Telecom Standardization Department of the United Nations International Telecommunication Union) submitted a proposal to support IMT-2020 (5G) sustainable power supply solution (No. L.1210) "Sustainable Power-feeding Solutions for 5G Network", and the "Digital Energy Storage System Solution" jointly submitted by the team of researcher Ci Song of EEA, Tsinghua University and CTTL (China Telecommunication Technology Labs) of CAICT (China Academy of Information and Communications Technology) was adopted by the standard. The ITU L.1210 standard aims to solve the challenges brought by the power consumption of 5G network to the existing power supply system, and provide solutions, standards and recommendations to support simple, intelligent and green network energy deployment in the evolution of 5G network from power supply system infrastructure, backup capacity and network operation and maintenance, etc.
ITU, an important specialized agency and the oldest international organization in the United Nations, is in charge of information and communication technology affairs, responsible for allocating and managing global radio spectrum and satellite orbit resources, formulating global telecommunication standards, providing telecommunication assistance to developing countries and promoting global telecommunication development. ITU-T (Telecom Standardization Department), the organizer of international communication standards under the United Nations, brings together experts and scholars from all over the world to study and formulate international communication standards, which are important elements of the global infrastructure of ICT and provide fair competition opportunities for industries and enterprises around the world to face emerging markets and technologies. ITU-T SG5 is committed to assessing the impact of ICT on climate change and publishes eco-friendly ICT technical guidelines according to environmental mission guidance to reduce the adverse environmental impact of ICT and e-waste by means of method design and recycling.
With the release of the ITU L.1210 standard, China Communications Standardization Association (CCSA TC4) has also started to formulate a series of standards for China 5G power supply. At present, the research project of "Technical Standard and Testing Method for Digital Energy Storage" of the CCSA 5G power feeding series standards developed with the leadership of EEA of Tsinghua University is initiated to formulate the industrial specifications and standards for digital energy storage systems suitable for the construction and operation of 5G in China. The industrially representative and influencing project is being studied by the three major telecommunication operators and mainstream communication enterprises including China Tower, Huawei and ZTE.
