October 14 is the 50th World Standards Day, and the theme activity of 2019 World Standards Day was held in Beijing on that day. At the meeting, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) released the list of IEC 1906 Awards of 2019. 204 experts from 25 countries and 75 technical committees/certification organizations were selected, including 18 Chinese experts. Prof. Liang Xidong, Department of Electrical Engineering (EEA), Tsinghua University, won the IEC 1906 award.
The IEC 1906 Award was established in 2004. It is one of the three important awards of IEC. It is established to commemorate the establishment of IEC in 1906. The award is given away once a year, to commend technical experts from all countries who have made outstanding contributions to the international standardization of IEC.
Prof. Liang Xidong’s profile:
He is professor and doctoral supervisor of the EEA in Tsinghuan University, IET fellow, CSEE fellow, and member of Administration Committee of Tsinghua University. From 1979 to 1991, he has received bachelor's degree, master's degree and doctor's degree successively in the EEA of Tsinghua University. From 1991 to 1992, he was a government-sponsored visiting scholar of UMIST in England. From 1992 to 1997, he was a lecturer and associate professor in the EEA of Tsinghua University. From July 1997 to now, he has been a professor in the EEA of Tsinghua University. In 2000, he won the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.
Prof. Liang Xidong served as the director of the EEA of Tsinghua University from 2001 to 2007.12, the president of Qinghai University from October 2009 to July 2013, and the director of State Key Lab of Safety Control and Simulation of Power System and Large-scale Power Generation Equipments of Tsinghua University from 2005 to 2019.9. At present, the main academic part-time jobs include: vice president and chairman of Academic Committee of China Electrotechnical Society (CES); executive director and vice chairman of the Academic Committee of Chinese Society of Electrical Engineering (CSEE); director of the Academic Committee of Beijing Society of Electrical Engineering; member of the Material and Emerging Testing Technology Committee of International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE), editorial board member of CIGRE Science & Engineering; convener of International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 36WG11 working group, and convener of MT19 working group.
Prof. Liang Xidong's research interests are high-voltage organic external insulation and high-capacity high-voltage transmission technology of power system. The researches on high-voltage organic external insulation materials and comprehensive aging, surface discharge of external insulation and AC/DC composite insulators have been highly appraised by domestic and foreign counterparts. He is one of the main pioneers in the field of organic external insulation of power system in China. His domestic and foreign awards and honors include two second prizes of national science and technology progress, first prize of science and technology progress of National Education Commission, first prize of China Electric Power Science and technology progress, second prize of science and technology progress of Shandong and Guangdong Provinces, first prize of Beijing teaching achievement, IEC 1906 Award, outstanding member of CIGRE, lifetime achievement award of INMR insulator technology.
