From September 29 to October 3, 2019, Prof. Zhao Zhengming, associate Prof. Sun Kai, associate Prof. Zhang Pinjia and 12 graduate students of Department of Electrical Engineering(EEA)attended the IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition (IEEE ECCE 2019) held in Baltimore, USA, and achieved fruitful results. The ECCE is the highest level international conference in the field of power electronics and electrical engineering co-sponsored by IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) and the Industrial Application Society (IAS). It is held in North America in September or October every year.

The ECCE of this year coincides with the grand ceremony of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. On October 1, 16 teachers and students from Tsinghua University took a group photo at the conference hall to praise and bless the motherland.

Prof. Zhao Zhengming, head of the research team, and his team members of large capacity power electronics and new power transmission in the EEA were invited by the ECCE2019 to give a three-and-half-hour special technical tutorial entitled Discrete State Event-Driven Method: A Novel Approach for Power Electronics Transient Simulation on September 29. Lecturers included Prof. Zhao Zhengming, Dr. Jin Hua of Powersim company and team graduate students Shi bochen, Zhu Yicheng, Yu Zhujun and Ju Jiahe. This is the only special technical lecture from China, which shows the latest research results of power electronic transient simulation. The simulation speed is hundreds or thousands of times higher than the existing technology, arousing heated discussion among participants. The DSED simulation method and software developed by Zhao Zhengming, professor of Department of Electrical Engineering (EEA), were demonstrated in the industrial exhibition of this ECCE2019, breaking through the foreign monopoly in the field of power electronic simulation, and gaining high attention and evaluation in the ECCE2019. Famous experts such as National Academy of Engineering (NAE) Members Fred C. Lee and Dushan Boroyevich, Canadian Academy of engineering (CAE) Fellow Yan-fei Liu, former IEEE PELS Chairman Don Tan, IEEE fellows Fred Wang, Alex Q. Huang and Graham Holmes, had in-depth exchanges with Zhao Zhengming Team's teachers and students at the exhibition stand, highly affirmed the prospect of the simulation method, and looked forward to the formation of general software as soon as possible. Prof. Zhao Zhengming Team's paper Phase Synchronization of Control Signals Based on Perturbation and Observation for Bidirectional Wireless Power Transfer System won the Best Paper Award of ECCE2019. In addition, Prof. Zhao Zhengming, on behalf of the Organizing Committee of IEEE eGrid2019, reported the preparation of eGrid2019 to the eGrid Steering Committee composed of experts from IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) and Power Energy Society (PES). The eGrid2019, jointly hosted by Tsinghua University and the Global Energy Internet Research Institute of State Grid, will be held in Xiamen from November 11 to 14. Experts at the meeting unanimously affirmed the preparatory work and put forward suggestions.

Associate Prof. Sun Kai, director of the Institute of Power Electronics and Electric Machine System of the EEA, organized and presided over a special session themed Bidirectional DC-DC Converters for Medium and Low Voltage DC Power Systems as chairman of this ECCE. The special session invited 8 scholars, including IEEE fellow Marco Liserre of Kiel University, IEEE fellow Hui Li of Florida State University, IEEE fellow Jung Ik Ha of Seoul National University, South Korea, Keiji Wada of Capital University, Tokyo, Japan, to make special reports, introducing and sharing the latest research progresses in relevant fields. The session attracted nearly 80 representatives from various countries to attend, with warm discussions and exchanges. As the PELS China liaison of IEEE Power Electronics Society (PES), associate Prof. Sun Kai reported the organizational activities of PELS branches in mainland China in 2019 at PELS Membership Committee Meeting. In addition, associate Prof. Sun Kai, as the chairman of PELS DC Microgrid Working Group, made a report on PELS TC1 (Power and Control Core Technical Committee). The experts of the Committee gave positive comments on the work of the DC microgrid working group and supported the working group to hold the Workshop on DC Grid Smart Transformer Technology in Beijing in June 2020.

As acting secretary, EEA associate Prof. Zhang Pinjia attended PELS TC3 (Technical Committee of Motor Drive and Actuator), IAS editorial board and standards meeting. In addition, as the chairman of the session, associate Prof. Zhang Pinjia presided over two sessions of the S13 Diagnostics and Fault Tolerance in Electric Drives and the S71 Transportation, Application, NVH and Diagnosis of Electric Machines.
