The 34th International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP) was held in Rzeszow, Poland, from September 3 to 7, 2018. At the closing ceremony of the conference at noon on the 7th, the ICLP Scientific Committee and the Award Committee announced the global list of four candidates for the Young Scientists Award. Meng Pengfei and Ma Xinyu, Ph.D. students in the Department of Electrical Engineering, won the Young Scientist Award at the Conference. It recognized Meng Pengfei for his outstanding achievements in improving the protection performance of lightning arresters, and Ma Xinyu for his outstanding achievements in the evolution effect of air pressure on the gas density and temperature in the pilot passage. Meng Pengfei's and Ma Xinyu's tutors are Prof. He Jinliang and Prof. Zeng Rong of Department of Electrical Engineering Tsinghua University, respectively.

The first session of the International Conference on Lightning Protection was held in Germany in 1951. It was held every two years, and mainly held in Europe. It is the most famous international conference in the field of lightning protection in the world. The Young Scientists Award of the International Conference on Lightning Protection is awarded to young scientists under 35 who have made innovative research in the field of lightning protection. The Award Committee evaluates the winners of the Young Scientists Award according to the appraisal results of the correspondence and oral reports.
