On June 22-23, 2018, the 2nd Workshop on Emerging Technology of Transportation Electrification jointly organized by Tsinghua University and CRRC Zhuzhou Institute Co., Ltd., was held in Tsinghua University. This Workshop was co-sponsored by Beijing Municipal Natural Science Foundation Committee, China Power Supply Society, National Converter Technology Engineering Center, Shenzhen Bronze Technologies Co., Ltd., National New Energy Vehicle Technology Innovation Center, IEEE Electrification Community (TEC) and IEEE Vehicle Technology Association (VTS Society). Prof. Ouyang Minggao, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Director of the State Key Laboratory of Automotive Safety and Energy of Tsinghua University, served as the Chairman of the Workshop. Prof. Zheng Li, Vice-President of Tsinghua University and Academician of CAS, Prof. Sun Fengchun of Beijing Institute of Technology, Prof. Feng Xiaoyun, Vice-President of Southwest Jiaotong University, Zhen Zijian, vice-Director of the Transportation Department of the High-tech Center of Ministry of Science and Technology, Wang Hong, Director of the Office of Beijing Municipal Natural Science Foundation Committee, and Wu Qiang, vice-Chief Engineer of CRRC Zhuzhou Institute, attended the Workshop. The Workshop was organized by Departments of Electrical Engineering, Department of Automotive Engineering and the Research Institute for Energy Internet. Prof. Li Yongdong of the Department of Electrical Engineering was appointed as the Chairman of the Organizing Committee, and associate Prof. Zheng Zedong of the Department of Electrical Engineering was the Secretary-General of the Workshop.

Prof. Zheng Li, Vice President of Tsinghua University, attended the Workshop and delivered a speech on behalf of the Tsinghua University. In his speech, Prof. Zheng mentioned that electrification transportation involves disciplines of vehicle, machinery, electrification, materials, electronic information and others, and it is a new and interdisciplinary field, which is also in line with the direction of the scientific research system reform of Tsinghua University. Under the background of actively promoting the revolution of energy production and consumption and implementing the strategy of transportation power, this Workshop will discuss the frontier scientific issues in the field of electrified transportation, promote the revolution of energy consumption in the field of transportation, and help the implementation of the powerful nation strategy in transportation. It is an exchange and ideological collision in the field of energy, electricity and transportation, and also is a beneficial try for the scientific research and talent-cultivating innovations in related domestic disciplines. Prof. Zheng hoped that through the Workshop, all attendees should strive to build a platform for scientific research cooperation and sharing of achievements, and make greater achievements in the electrification transportation and related scientific and technological innovation!

More than 240 experts and scholars from universities, research institutes and enterprises at home and abroad participated in the Workshop. Prof. Sun Fengchun, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Prof. Daniel Kammen of the University of California, Berkeley and other experts and scholars from many universities, research institutes and enterprises at home and abroad conducted in-depth discussion and exchanges on the key technologies, development trends, industry development and policy recommendations in electrification transportation. 12 reports at the Workshop, 17 reports at the sub-forums, 2 open technology exchanges and 1 round table forum were arranged.

At the round table forum, the following experts, such as Ouyang Minggao, Academician of Tsinghua University, Prof. Chen Yaobin, Chairman of IEEE Electrification Transport Committee, Jiang Bing, Chairman of State Grid Electric Vehicle Service Co., Ltd., Guo Jiaofeng, Researcher of Development Research Center of the State Council, Prof. He Zhengyou of Southwest Jiaotong University, Chief Engineer Wang Litian of China Railway Electrification Survey Design & Research Institute (EDI), conducted exchanges and discussions on the key technologies, industrial layout and policies of electrification transportation. The round table forum was presided over by Gao Feng, executive vice President of the Research Institute for Energy Internet Innovation, Tsinghua University.

The Workshop on Emerging Technology of Transportation Electrification, jointly initiated by Tsinghua University and CRRC Zhuzhou Institute, is the first interdisciplinary, cross-cutting and open forum in the field of China’s electrified transportation. It has received positive responses from domestic universities, scientific research institutions and enterprises, and has been highly recognized by IEEE. At present, it is the only one open academic forum with the theme of electrified transportation under the IEEE.
