On the afternoon of June 16, the appointment ceremony for a Tsinghua University Distinguished Visiting Professor was held in Lecture Hall 103, Area 3, West Main Building. Professor Marcio Szechtman, former Chair of the Technical Council of the International Council on Large Electric Systems (CIGRE) and IEEE Life Fellow, visited Tsinghua University by invitation, was appointed Distinguished Visiting Professor of Tsinghua University, and delivered a keynote lecture entitled Main Issues of Modern Power Systems in the Energy Transition Era. More than 30 participants attended the event, including Zheng Zedong, Party Secretary of the Department of Electrical Engineering; Yu Zhanqing, Deputy Party Secretary; Sun Kai, Deputy Head of the Department; Zhao Biao, Associate Dean of the Ziqiang College; and faculty and student representatives from the Department. The appointment ceremony was chaired by Sun Kai.

At the ceremony, Sun Kai introduced Professor Marcio Szechtman’s academic achievements and his significant contributions to advancing high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission technology and promoting international cooperation in power engineering worldwide. Zheng Zedong, Party Secretary of the Department of Electrical Engineering, presented Professor Marcio Szechtman with the Certificate of Appointment as Tsinghua University Distinguished Visiting Professor. He expressed his gratitude for Professor Szechtman’s longstanding support for the Department’s development and looked forward to further deepening comprehensive cooperation in next-generation transmission technology research and development, talent cultivation, and international academic exchange. In his remarks, Professor Marcio Szechtman stated that being appointed a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Tsinghua University was an exceptional honor. He sincerely thanked Tsinghua University and the Department of Electrical Engineering for their recognition and invitation, and expressed his commitment to using this appointment as an opportunity to deepen cooperation with Tsinghua University and jointly advance innovation and development in power system technologies for the energy transition era.

Biography of the Guest

Professor Marcio Szechtman is an internationally renowned authority in high-voltage direct current transmission and power system planning. He is an IEEE Life Fellow and currently serves as Technical Advisor to the Huairou National Laboratory and Huawei’s Energy Business Unit. He previously served as Director of the Brazilian Electric Energy Research Center (Cepel), Chief Transmission Officer of Centrais Elétricas Brasileiras S.A. (Eletrobras), and Chair of the CIGRE Technical Council (2018–2024). With more than 40 years of industry experience, he has long been devoted to research and innovation in HVDC system stability, planning of complex DC grids, and high-capacity transmission technologies. Professor Marcio Szechtman has received numerous honors, including the CIGRE Gold Medal and the Uno Lamm Award, the highest distinction in the field of high-voltage direct current transmission.
