On August 21, the 2025 Annual Management Committee Meeting of the Tsinghua University (State Key Laboratory of Power Systems) – Beijing HyperStrong Technology Co., Ltd. Joint Research Center for Key Technologies of Grid-Forming Electrochemical Energy Storage Systems was successfully held in the West Main Building of Tsinghua University. The committee conducted in-depth discussions on important topics such as the annual research progress of the Joint Research Center, future directions of work, and enhancing collaborative efforts.

Attendees included Zheng Zedong, Secretary of the CPC Committee of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA); Deputy Dean Lu Chao; Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory of Power Systems Xu Fei; EEA faculty members Xie Xiaorong, Wang Kui, and Wang Chao; as well as HyperStrong Chairman Zhang Jianhui, Chief Technology Officer Qian Hao, General Manager of Product Management Department Yang Zhenhua, and Senior Manager of Power Electronics Department Cheng Shijie. The meeting was chaired by Xu Fei, Director of the Joint Research Center’s Management Committee.

At the Meeting

On behalf of the Joint Research Center, Xie Xiaorong presented the annual work summary, systematically reviewing the research objectives, progress, and interim achievements of the three major projects: Key Technology Research and Product Development of New Energy Storage Converters, Control Technology for Grid-Forming Energy Storage Systems, and Broadband Oscillation Suppression Technology for New Energy Storage Systems.

Cheng Shijie, Senior Manager of HyperStrong’s Power Electronics Department and Deputy Director of the Joint Research Center, reported on the main research objectives, research plans, and collaboration arrangements for the Center’s second year of operation.

During subsequent discussions, Xu Fei noted that HyperStrong represents the leading edge of the energy storage industry. He emphasized that Professor Min Yong’s fixed-frequency control technology at EEA has clear advantages in suppressing oscillations in renewable energy grids and expressed anticipation for accelerated on-site validation of related technologies in HyperStrong’s power stations. Xu also mentioned that the State Key Laboratory of Power Systems has officially established a new facility in Changping, where a grid-forming energy storage technology demonstration platform is under construction. He warmly welcomed the HyperStrong team to visit and exchange ideas there in the future.

Lu Chao introduced Tsinghua University’s disciplinary and institutional plans in the energy field, including the International Mega Science Program for Carbon Neutrality and Smart Energy Networks, the National Institute of Energy, and the Energy Grand Alliance. He suggested potential synergies between these institutions and HyperStrong’s international business and expressed the hope for HyperStrong’s active participation. Lu also proposed leveraging both sides’ strengths to jointly apply for major national projects such as Smart Grid 2030 to further advance China’s energy storage technologies.

Zheng Zedong pointed out that national policies are highly favorable for the long-term development of the energy storage industry. He praised HyperStrong’s foresight in investing early in forward-looking research ranging from equipment to systems and in providing extensive validation opportunities for academic research outcomes. On behalf of the EEA, Zheng expressed gratitude for HyperStrong’s trust and support. He affirmed that the EEA will continue to fully support the Joint Research Center’s work and hoped to further leverage both sides’ technological and application advantages to accelerate the deployment of new technologies and expand deep cooperation in more areas.

HyperStrong Chairman Zhang Jianhui delivered the closing remarks. He spoke highly of the pragmatic collaboration and phased achievements between the EEA and the State Key Laboratory of Power Systems over the past year. Zhang noted that energy storage power stations represent the core form of the future energy storage industry and that HyperStrong is rapidly transforming from an equipment manufacturer to an investor and operator of energy storage stations. Looking ahead, he stated that the company will use the Joint Research Center as a platform to fully integrate Tsinghua University’s theoretical and cutting-edge technological strengths with HyperStrong’s engineering validation and practical implementation capabilities, focusing on the safety and stability challenges of energy storage systems, promoting efficient renewable energy utilization, and continuously expanding the scope and depth of cooperation to jointly lead the high-quality development of the energy storage industry.

Before the annual Management Committee Meeting, the Joint Research Center held its annual technical summary meeting. Faculty members responsible for each project provided detailed reports on the first-year research progress, outcomes, and future plans. The HyperStrong R&D team engaged in in-depth exchanges with project leaders on key technical issues, identifying major research directions for future collaboration.
