On September 24, the 50MW/100MWh Digital Energy Storage Demonstration Project of Large-Scale Advanced Power Storage Key Technology Research and Demonstration Project of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA), Tsinghua University was successfully accepted by experts at the No. 2 station of the New Generation Grid-Friendly Green Power Plant of Three Gorges Ulanqab in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The acceptance meeting was organized by the Science and Technology Research Institute of China Three Gorges Corporation (hereinafter referred to as “Three Gorges Research Institute”). The acceptance expert committee consisted of experts and representatives from State Grid Gansu Electric Power Research Institute, Institute of Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Three Gorges Energy Quality, Safety & Environmental Protection Department, Comprehensive Energy Center of Three Gorges Research Institute, Three Gorges Onshore Energy Investment, Three Gorges Northern Construction & Management, Three Gorges Development New Energy Department, China Energy Engineering Group Jiangsu Institute, and the project and contract management departments of Three Gorges Research Institute, jointly conducting the acceptance review.

The project team reported the overall situation of the research project and demonstration project, the project execution and demonstration project construction work report, and the demonstration project construction achievements and operation analysis report. Experts reviewed and approved the demonstration project acceptance plan, conducted an on-site inspection of the 50MW/100MWh digital energy storage station and control system, and examined supporting materials including the demonstration project construction work report, demonstration project operation analysis report, equipment arrival, installation and commissioning records, 168-hour trial operation completion and application verification, and the third-party inspection report of the “Three Gorges Jihong Wind-Solar Storage No. 2 Station Primary Frequency Regulation Test Report.”

After expert inquiries and discussions, the operation review and acceptance opinions for the demonstration project were formed. Experts concluded that the acceptance materials submitted by the project team were complete and standardized. The construction and grid-connected joint commissioning of the 50MW/100MWh digital energy storage station have been completed, and the equipment functions and performance indicators meet project requirements. The system has been stably operating for over a year with good performance. The energy management system and intelligent operation & maintenance platform have completed system R&D testing and engineering deployment, operating smoothly. Overall, the operation of the 50MW/100MWh digital energy storage demonstration project is significantly better than traditional storage systems deployed at the same site and meets contract requirements. Experts unanimously agreed to approve the demonstration project acceptance.

The Large-Scale Advanced Power Storage Key Technology Research and Demonstration Project is a key research project of the Tsinghua University–China Three Gorges Corporation Joint Research Institute for Energy and Power New Technologies. The project aims to realize highly safe, long-life, low-cost, large-scale electrochemical energy storage efficient integration and operational control based on digital energy storage technology with dynamically reconfigurable battery networks. By dynamically reconfiguring the millisecond-level battery network topology, the inherent weaknesses of battery systems are fundamentally eliminated. The project’s related achievements have been successively selected as “Typical Cases of Green and Low-Carbon Energy Transition by the National Energy Administration,” “Pilot Demonstration Projects of New Energy Storage by the National Energy Administration,” and listed in the “Fifth Batch of Major Technical Equipment for First Units of Energy Storage” by the National Energy Administration.
