Recently, the list of awardees for the 20th Beijing Higher Education Teaching Award and the 8th Beijing Higher Education Young Teacher Award was announced, with seven Tsinghua University faculty members receiving awards. Among them, Professor Liang Xidong from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA) was granted the 20th Beijing Higher Education Teaching Award.

The Beijing Higher Education Teaching Award aims to recognize outstanding teachers who demonstrate excellent teaching ethics, long-term engagement in frontline teaching, effective teaching outcomes, high student evaluations, and recognition by peers. Since its inception in 2003, Tsinghua University has had 101 faculty members honored with the Beijing Teaching Award and 22 faculty members with the Beijing Young Teacher Award.

Professor Liang Xidong

Biography: Professor Liang Xidong is the Dean of Weiyang College, a tenured professor in EEA, a doctoral advisor, an IET Fellow, a member of the University Affairs Committee of Tsinghua University, a Fellow of the China Electrotechnical Society, Vice Chairman of the Academic Work Committee, and a Fellow of the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering. He completed his undergraduate and graduate studies in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Tsinghua University from 1979 to 1991, earning a Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degree. He was a visiting scholar at UMIST in the UK from 1991 to 1992, and from 1992 to 1997, he served as a lecturer and associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Tsinghua University. Since July 1997, he has been a professor in the same department. In 2000, he was granted the National Outstanding Young Scientist Fund, and in May 2020, he was appointed as the first dean of Weiyang College at Tsinghua University. From 2001 to 2007, he served as the Dean of the EEA at Tsinghua, and from October 2009 to July 2013, he was the President of Qinghai University. He was also the Director of the State Key Laboratory of Safety Control and Simulation of Power Systems and Large Power Generation Equipment from 2005 to 2019. His current academic positions include serving as an Executive Director of the China Electrotechnical Society, Vice Chair of its Academic Committee, Convenor of the IEC TC36 WG11 and MT19 Working Groups.

Professor Liang has taught the core undergraduate course “High Voltage Engineering” for 31 years, consistently exploring curriculum reforms with exemplary results. This course has been selected as a National First-Class Undergraduate Course, a National Excellent Course, and a Beijing Excellent Course. His teaching reforms have earned him the First Prize of the Beijing Teaching Achievement Award. He has also been recognized with the Tsinghua University New Century Teaching Achievement Award, Beijing Outstanding Teacher, Beijing Model Teacher, two National Science and Technology Progress Second Prizes, the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress First Prize, the China Electric Power Science and Technology First Prize, the CIGRE Distinguished Member Award, the INMR Lifetime Achievement Award in Insulator Technology, and two IEC 1906 Awards, among other national and international awards and honors.
