On March 29, 2023, a book Modern Power System Protection, planned by Academician Lu Qiang, the famous expert on power system, and written by relevant scholars under his leadership, was officially published by Tsinghua University Press. It plays a significant role in improving the academic level and high-level talent training in the field of power systems.
With the emergence of AC/DC hybrid power grids and the large-scale incorporation of new energy to the power grid, modern power systems have put forward more requirements for relay protection. With the powerful processing capability of microcomputers, relay protection is developing quickly. The purpose of the author in writing this book is to reflect the new progress of relay protection in theoretical research and practical engineering application on the basis of classical relay protection theory and technology.
Introduction
This book mainly introduces new relay protection technologies that are widely used in field applications, such as HV-line optical fiber current differential protection, and power frequency variation distance protection, etc. At the same time, it adds content such as DC protection, traveling wave protection, system protection, etc. on the basis of undergraduate power system relay protection principles, in order to expand the scope of relay protection disciplines and broaden the vision of researchers.
This book can be used as a postgraduate textbook or as a reference for engineering technicians.
Features of this book
The system continues traditional textbooks. The writing system of the whole book extends the teaching system of relay protection principles in China’s power system.
Focus on the latest technology in the content. It focuses on introducing new relay protection technologies that are widely used in the field, and adds theoretical knowledge related to modern power system requirements, intending to provide a comprehensive reflection of the latest theoretical and technological advances in the field of relay protection.

A message from the authors
Mr. Lu Qiang planned the content of modern power system protection in the book Modern Power Systems 15 years ago. However, due to busy daily teaching and scientific research work, and their shallow understanding and contribution to relay protection, the authors have been hesitant to write until now. In September last year, the initial draft of this book was completed, and the authors personally presented it to Mr. Lu Qiang for review, who gave it high praise and affirmation. Unfortunately, just before the completion of this book, Mr. Lu Qiang passed away suddenly, and was unable to witness the publication of this book, which became a lifelong pity for the authors. The publication of this book is also a tribute to Mr. Lu Qiang’s trust and support, as well as a show of respect and remembrance for him.
We believe that China’s electric power science will lead the development of world electric power technology; we believe that the book will further lead and help generations of power industry technology workers to open up a path to prosperity.
According to the educational philosophy of Academician Gao Jingde, the role of books is not mainly to “fill a bucket of water”, but to “ignite a fire”.
Academician Lu’s reputation will last on forever.
We believe that China’s electric power technology can light the path of world electric power technology.
