On September 23,  a S eminar of Tsinghua University on Labor Education, one of the 26th series seminars on educational work , was held in the meeting room of the West Main Building. The seminar   made an  in-depth discussion on promoting the constitution  of a labor education system which  reflects the educational requirement in  the new era and the characteristics of Tsinghua University. Guo Yong, D eputy S ecretary of the University   P arty C ommittee, attended the seminar and delivered a speech.

Guo Yong pointed out that Tsinghua University, in long-term school running, has cultivated an excellent tradition of labor education and has been constantly enriching and innovating the content and form of labor education with the reform and development of the university, which has laid a good foundation for the comprehensive promotion of labor education for students in the future. The formulation “Tsinghua University’s Plan on Labor Education Implementation” has been discussed repeatedly by teachers from relevant departments and offices until a consensus is formed, students are made to practice and work hard, but how to implement and how to evaluate the effect still need to be further explored and concluded. Guo Yong put forward four hopes for the development of labor education in the future: the first is to focus on the combination of in-class and after-class education, further amplify the effect of curricula, and enlarge the coverage of labor education in the second classroom; the second is to encourage cross integration and highlight the curriculum features and innovation thoughts; the third is to cultivate the quality and spirit of labor, pay attention to the use of labor skills, so that students can establish a correct concept of labor and enhance their feelings for the working people; the fourth is to strengthen the construction of labor education bases, expand channel resources, and provide more support for labor education.

In his speech, Yu Xinjie, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA), introduced the background of this seminar on labor education and EEAs measures on strengthening labor education. Zhang Ting, Head of the Students Branch of the Party Committee and Head of the Branch of Armed Forces, introduced the policy background, significance and formulation process of the “Tsinghua University’s Plan on Labor Education Implementation”, and particularly introduced the main content of the implementation plan. Yang Jianxin, deputy director of the Basic Industrial Training Center, introduced some special labor education courses such as “Metalwork Practice” and “Manufacturing Engineering Experience”, and said that the Center will carry forward the tradition of engineering practice teaching and strive to create a highland for innovative talent training. Wang Rui, deputy secretary of the Party Committee of the Department of Water Conservancy, shared the history and inheritance of the Department of Water Conservancy’s “Graduation Project Design with “True Skills and True Material, and he mentioned that students must be educated in practice so as to develop their talents and make contributions, and ideological and political work can be done in voluntary work. Wang Tingjie, a professor of the Department of Chemical Engineering and the course leader of “Chemical Practice”, shared their innovative educational model of the “Chemical Practice” and said that labor education must be combined with the demand of majors, the teaching requirement must be standardized and work site can be used as a classroom so that the labor spirit can be integrated in professional practice. Wu Chengjin, head of the student group of Weiyang Academy, shared his experience in integrating labor education into the ideological and political work system comprehensively and exploring innovative points of labor practice with academic characteristics.

In the free discussion session, representatives of various colleges and departments fully exchanged their views on how to carry out labor education in combination with characteristics of majors so as to enhance the role of teamwork in labor education, shared their measures on fully integrating labor education in students’ daily life and campus culture, and put forward opinions and suggestions on strengthening the institutionalization and standardization of labor education, and reinforcing inter-department planning and resource support. The Food Center, the Repair Center and the Student Community Center exchanged their views on the three-level education system of the Food Center, problems in the labor education work of the Repair Center, and the labor education work and job setting of the Community Center.

This seminar was jointly organized by the Students Branch of the University Party Committee and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics. More than 30 people including the heads of relevant offices, departments and units which undertake labor education courses and carry out labor education series activities, and heads and staff representatives of some colleges and departments in charge of teaching work and students’ work, attended the meeting.
