August 23 is the registration day for the graduate students admitted to Tsinghua in 2022. 90 new doctoral students and 44 new graduate students admitted to the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA) in 2022 reported on time with high spirit to add new energy to EEA. Guided by the University, EEA organized a series of graduate student orientation activities in an orderly manner to provide a strong guarantee for their registration and lay a good foundation for the study and life of these freshmen.

On the day of registration, a banner of “Welcome! New Students” was hung at the entrance of the West Main Building. The teachers and volunteers in charge of the registration work were ready to provide a full range of registration services. New graduate students received the Freshman Handbook, Graduate Student’s Certificate, Student Status Card, Student Card, Physical Examination Form, School Badge, EEA’s T-shirt and recruiting materials for students’ groups and associations at the orientation point, and went through the relevant procedures. All the students at the reception point strictly abided by the university’s pandemic prevention measures, and completed the registration work in an orderly manner; the staff present enthusiastically answered questions for the freshmen, which fully reflected the care from EEA.

On the morning of August 31, all the freshmen of EEA participated in the semester beginning ceremony of the graduate students admitted to Tsinghua University in 2022 under the orderly organization of graduate students’ work team. 10 students attended the main venue at the integrated gymnasium as representatives of the new graduate students, and the rest watched the ceremony in live broadcast in the Lecture Hall 3-217 of the West Main Building. At the ceremony, President Wang Xiqin delivered a speech entitled “Follow the truth and the good, make all easy to know and follow”, and put on the badge of Tsinghua University for the freshman representative Wang Yunan. Fu Yujie, chairman of the Graduate Student Union and a doctoral student of the School of Marxism, delivered a speech on behalf of the graduate students; Tang Chuanxiang, a professor of the Department of Engineering and Physics, delivered a speech on behalf of all the teachers; Zheng Hao, a master student of the Department of Civil Engineering, and Wang Yunan, a doctoral student of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, delivered speeches on behalf of the freshmen.

On the afternoon of August 31, EEA held the semester beginning ceremony for the graduate students admitted in 2022 at Lecture Hall 3-217 of the West Main Building. EEA Dean Kang Chongqing, EEA’s Part Committee Secretary Yu Xinjie and members of the Party and Government Joint Committee, directors and deputy directors of all research institutes and administrative staff attended the ceremony. The ceremony was presided over by Liu Lin, a member of EEA’s Party Committee.

At the beginning of the ceremony, Yu Xinjie, Secretary of the Party Committee of EEA, delivered a welcome speech on behalf of EEA and extended a warm welcome to the new students who joined EEA. He put forward three suggestions and requirements for everyone in terms of improving research capabilities, correctly handling the relationship with mentors, and doing well in pandemic control. He encouraged everyone to make reasonable use of time, correct scientific research attitudes, establish national feelings and the bottom line of academic norms, do well in  research and personal protection, and reasonably arrange project travels and research work according to the requirement for pandemic control. Finally, Professor Yu Xinjie expressed his ardent expectations to the freshmen, and hoped that the students could closely implement the departmental motto of “Strict in learning and upright in behaving” in their research work and life!

Xu Chaoqun, a doctoral student of engineering and winner of the “Academic Rookie” of Tsinghua University, spoke as a representative of the senior students. He hopes that the freshmen will keep walking in the same direction as the motherland in the future scientific research career, aiming at the major needs of the country, calming down and get into study, and do well in scientific research with EEA’s characteristics under the guidance of mentors. In addition, he pointed out that everyone should stop setting limits for themselves but believe in the short-term impulse response of Tsinghua people in the face of difficulties and challenges; keep grateful and positive and make self-improvement.

Zhao Biao from the Institute of Flexible AC Transmission and Distribution Systems delivered a speech as a teacher representative. He reviewed his ten years of scientific research experience since his Ph.D., and shared his insights and experiences in three points: selection, implementation and persistence. He said: in scientific research topic selection, everyone should closely link their own development with national needs, industry needs, and team needs, and integrate into the main trend to solve big problems, real problems, and difficult problems; when there is a correct judgment and selection, don't hesitate but show the courage to insist, believe in yourself and the team, communicate and discuss with the mentors, and go against the difficulties; calm down, cherish the time, and cherish the platforms of Tsinghua University and EEA, learn knowledge and skills, accumulate strength, and join the electrical engineering career!

Yang Yuexi, a new doctoral student of engineering, and Guo Kuixing, a new graduate student, delivered speeches respectively as representatives of the freshmen.

Yang Yuexi reviewed her 6 years of study in EEA and her work experience in the State Grid Smart Grid Research Institute after graduation, and thanked EEA for the valuable spiritual wealth given to her. She said that she would use EEA’s first-class scientific research platform and advantageous resources to inject her own engineering practice experience into learning and research, make a difference, and make creative achievements in promoting the development of the power industry and the progress of engineering technology , and contribute to the development of national independent innovation and the realization of the “double carbon” goal.

Guo Kuixing expressed his expectation for a new life after returning to Tsinghua after his supportive teaching work. He hoped that he could be rooted in exploration and challenge with his classmates, temper his skills and perseverance, be rooted in the country and the people, shoulder the responsibility of the times, share the same breath and destiny with the motherland, make full use of knowledge and skills, keep the original aspiration, and closely combine personal development with the destiny of the country.

EEA Dean Kang Chongqing delivered a speech. He introduced EEA’s history since its establishment in 1932, and expressed his ardent expectations for the students in three pairs of words: personal interests and national needs, personal characteristics and Tsinghua style, and personal development and EEA’s spirit. He hopes that the students can combine their personal interests with the needs of the country to do truly meaningful and valuable scientific research; better integrate and practice the spirit of Tsinghua University and the spirit of EEA, calm down and climb up bravely, try all to be the participants, witnesses and creators in the development of the energy industry of the motherland, and shoulder the responsibility and mission assigned to the Tsinghua people.
