On July 17-21, 2022, the annual conference of the Power and Energy Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE PES) was held in Denver, USA. The “Gu Yuxiu Electrical Engineering Award” jointly established by the Chinese Society of Electrical Engineering and IEEE PES was granted to the winner at the award ceremony.

Shu Yinbiao, chairman of the Chinese Society of Electrical Engineering, and Saifur Rahman, former chairman of IEEE PES and chairman-designate of IEEE, delivered speeches respectively. The winner of the 2022 Gu Yuxiu Electrical Engineering Award is Professor Wu Weihan of Tsinghua University, in recognition of his pioneering contribution to numerical calculation of electromagnetic transients and lightning protection of power systems.

Chairman Shu Yinbiao pointed out in his speech that the Gu Yuxiu Electrical Engineering Award was established more than ten years ago and has attracted widespread attention in the industry and society. He extended warm congratulation to Professor Wu Weihan for winning the award, thanked the international selection committee for their excellent work, and thanked IEEE PES for co-establishing this award, which has set a good example for international cooperation.

Professor Wu Weihan said in his acceptance speech that it is a very important honor to receive the Gu Yuxiu Electrical Engineering Award, and he reviewed the scientific research work in electromagnetic transient numerical analysis, overvoltage protection and insulation coordination, and took this opportunity to thank all colleagues for their joint efforts in related research.

The “Gu Yuxiu Electrical Engineering Award” selects a scientific and technological worker who has made important contribution to the advancement of science and technology in the field of electrical engineering every year. After years of cultivation and development, it has been recognized by the industry for its “high gold content” and “rarity”.

From 1955 to 1959, Professor Wu Weihan was a postgraduate student in the Moscow Institute of Dynamics, majoring in high-voltage technology, and obtained an associate doctorate degree in Soviet science and technology. He used to be the dean of the Department of Electrical Engineering, director of the Institute of Electrical Engineering, and director of the Academic Degree Committee of Tsinghua University. He has completed a number of projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Doctoral Fund of Education Commission and national key scientific and technological research projects. He has published a monograph “Numerical Calculation of Overvoltage in Power System” and more than 60 scientific papers, and receives special government subsidies. Professor Wu Weihan is one of the pioneers in the field of numerical calculation of electromagnetic transient in China, and has been devoting to the research in this field throughout his life.
