From March 23, 2021, Sun Hongbin,Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineeringand Applied Electronicsof Tsinghua University andDirector of the Smart Grid and New Energy Laboratory of Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen College, was entrusted by the Price Department of the National Development and Reform Commission to carry outa research on major tasks, paths, economic impact and assessment suggestions for the power gridtransformation and development adapting to the carbon peaking andcarbon neutrality goals.Under the leadership, organization and careful guidance of Professor Sun Hongbin, the team of Associate Professor Guo Ye from Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen College activelyhavecarried out relevant research work, summarized the overall situation of carbon peaking and carbon neutralityat home and abroad, and proposedthe core target in the power grid transformation and development adapting to thecarbon peaking and carbon neutrality goal of China, discussed the existing difficulties and challenges,recommended 12 key transformation tasksin the practice of“source - grid - load - storage” and theintegratedsystem, and evaluate theimpact oftransformationon multi-grid incorporation.

On June 6, 2021, Tsinghua University and Taiyuan University of Technology jointly hosted the “TopForum on Market and Policies for Power System Transformation under the Dual-Carbon Goal”. Professor Sun Hongbin presided over the forum, andAssociate Professor Guo Ye made a pilot research report titled “Discussion on the Key Tasks and Paths of Power Grid Transformation and DevelopmentAdaptingto the Electricity Price Reformfor Carbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality”.Many participating experts, includingShi Jialin, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Datang Group, Yao Qiang, Deputy General Manager of China Power Construction Group, Qiu Jianhang, General Manager of Ganghua Energy, Zhang Junliu, Deputy General Manager of State Grid Shanxi Electric Power Company, Liu Zi, Deputy General Manager of Three Gorges New Energy, Zhang Manping,ChiefEngineer ofChina Energy Engineering Corporation, had adeepdiscussion and put forward a number of important suggestions.

According to the opinions and suggestions put forward by the experts, the team furthermade in-depth research and discussion, summarized and improved the previous research results, and submitted theresearch report on“Major Tasks, Paths, Economic Impact and Assessment Suggestions for the Power Grid Transformation andDevelopment Adapting to theCarbon Peaking and Carbon Neutrality Goals” to the National Development and Reform Commission in August 2021.

Sun Hongbin, Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics of Tsinghua University,VicePresident of Taiyuan University of Technology (in charge of administrative work),Director of the Smart Grid and New Energy Laboratory of Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen College, IEEE Fellow, and IET Fellow, is longengaged intheresearchonpower system dispatch and control, smart grid, and energy Internet, especially on energy management systems, automatic voltage control and integrated energy systems. He has won 1 first prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award (rank 1) and 1 second prize of National Technological Invention Award (rank 2), andhis achievementwas twice selectedinto top ten scientific and technological progress in Chinese universities (rank 1 and 2).

Guo Ye,an associate professor at Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen College,is mainly engaged intheresearchondistributed optimization, power market, energy Internet, and the application of artificial intelligence in power energy systems.He won thebest paper award ofthe most important academic conference IEEE PES General Meeting in this field for 4 times in three consecutive years from 2019 to 2021. Research scientist Zhou Jianguo,postdoctoral fellows Tang Wenjun and Luo Zhe, postgraduate students Liu Hao, Shi Jiantao, Yi Xinyi and Wu Wenli, et al fromTsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute also participated in this work.
