From August 30 to September 4, 2021, the 2021 Asian PhD School on Advanced Power Electronics was successfullyestablished by Sichuan Energy Internet Research and the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University. This PhD School isestablished by Tsinghua University,co-establishedby IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS), China Electrotechnical Society and Xi’an Jiaotong Universityintechnical cooperation,undertaken bySichuan Energy Internet Research Institute and Department of Electrical Engineering ofTsinghua University, with the assistance from Asian Power Electronics Coordinating Committee (APECC), Sichuan Tianfu New District, and PELS Chengdu Branch.

ThisPhD school was held online andoffline, courses were live broadcasted and the video can be recorded forstudents who were unable to watch the live broadcast due to time difference, andan offline classroom was set at in Tsinghua University and TsinghuaSichuan Energy Internet Research Institute. 10 top-grade international experts in the field of power electronics,includingLi Zeyuan, ForeignAcademician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering,Academician of the American Academy of Engineering and Professor of Virginia Tech,Tim Green,AcademicianofRoyal Academy of Engineering andProfessor Imperial College London, Rik De Doncker,Academician of the American Academy of Engineering andProfessor of Virginia Tech, Rik De Doncker,Academician of the German Academy of Engineering andProfessor of Aachen University of Technology, Frede Blaabjerg, Academician of the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences and Professor of Aalborg University, Seung-Ki Sul,IEEE William E. Newell Prize winner and Professor of Seoul National University, Alan Mantooth, former Chairman of IEEE Power Electronics Society and Professor of University of Arkansas, Grahame Holmes,Former Vice Chairman of IEEE Power Electronics Society andProfessor of Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Liu Jinjun, Vice Chairman of IEEE Power Electronics Society andProfessor of Xi’an Jiaotong University,and Zhao Zhengming,IEEE Fellow and Professor of Tsinghua University, were invitedto give lectures on the recent development trends and latest researchachievements in the field of power electronics in 10 topics. More than 260 students from 19 countries signed up to participate in thisPhD school, of which 72 were international students.

At the opening ceremony of the summer school, Professor Xiao Xi, chairman of the organizing committee of thePhD school and vicepresident of the Graduate School of Tsinghua University, first gave a welcome speech. Professor Xiao Xi introduced the initiation and evolution of the AsianPhD Schoolon Advanced Power Electronics, and expressed his gratitude to the organizers,lecture experts, and volunteers who participated in the organization ofthisPhDschool. In his speech, Professor Liu Jinjun, vicepresident of the IEEE Power Electronics Society, thetechnical partner of this PhD school, introduced the original intention of hosting the AsianPhDSchool of Advanced Power Electronics to promote academic exchange between domestic and overseas teachers and students and advance the power electronics.Professor Lu Zongxiang, executive vice president of Sichuan Energy Internet Research Institute of Tsinghua University, introduced Sichuan Energy Internet Research Institute in his speech, hoping that power electronics can promote the development of energy Internet.
