On behalf of the two sides, Xue Qikun, vice president of Tsinghua University and Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), signed contracts with Nigel Brandon, dean of Engineering College, Provost's Board Member of Imperial College London and fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering. Ma Jun, director of Overseas Projects Department, Tsinghua University, Lu Xiaojun and Zhang Yousheng in the Scientific Research Institute of Tsinghua University, Professor Kang Chongqing, director of the EEA THU, Prof. Eric Yeatman, director of Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Imperial College London and fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering, Prof. Tim Green, director of Energy Futures Laboratory EFL and fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering, Prof. Richard Green, director of Department of Management, and Prof. Goran Strbac in Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, witnessed the signing.

Prof. Kang Chongqing serves as the Chinese director of the Imperial-Tsinghua Research Center on Intelligent Power and Energy Systems, and Prof. Goren Schauber is the British director. This is an important progress in promoting cooperation between Tsinghua University and Imperial College of London after Tsinghua University President Qiu Yong and Imperial College President Alice Gast signed the strategic cooperation agreement between the two universities on October 24, 2017. The Research Center aims to bring together scholars from Tsinghua University and Imperial College London to study the frontier and fundamental issues in the transformation of smart power and energy systems to low-carbon and clean.

Prof. Tim Green, director of the Future Energy Laboratory and fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, chaired the meeting. Vice-President Xue Qikun and President Nagil Brand delivered speeches respectively, and introduced the basic situations of their respective schools. President Nagil Brand introduced the cooperation between Imperial College London and China in detail. He pointed out that China is the second largest source country of Imperial College students, second only to Britain itself. It is of great significance for both sides to establish a joint research center. Vice President Xue Qikun introduced Tsinghua University's global development strategy and expressed Tsinghua University's willingness to cooperate with Imperial College in a broader way. Subsequently, the two sides signed a contract for the establishment of the Research Centre and exchanged souvenirs.

Finally, teachers and students of the two sides held an academic seminar. EEA Associate Professors Zhang Ning and Zhong Haiwang, and Ph.D. Zhuo Zhenyu, respectively discussed the three themes: Standardized matrix modeling of multiple energy systems, recent development of demand response and its implementation in China, and incorporating massive scenarios in transmission planning under high renewable penetration, and introduced the latest research results in Tsinghua. Researchers Ioannis Konstantelos and Paola Falugi, and Doctoral Student Jochen Cremer of Imperial College London shared their latest research results, including smart micro-grid, model predictive control for power system and big data challenge on dynamic security assessment.

The successful convening of the meeting marked the formal establishment of the Imperial-Tsinghua Research Center on Intelligent Power and Energy Systems. Tsinghua University and Imperial College London have great complementary in the research of intelligent power and energy systems. The establishment of the Research Center can complement each other's strengths and weaknesses, and promote researches in related fields.
