November 22, the founding ceremony of Institute for New Technology Concept VehiclesinTsinghua University was held at the Reception Hall of Main Building in Tsinghua University. Mr. Chen Yuan who is the vice Chairman of the 12thCPPCC National Committee and Mr. Qiu Yong who is the President of Tsinghua University jointly unveiled the nameplate for the new Institute. Mr. Chen takes the post of Director of the Management Committee, and Mr. Li Jun who is the professor of Department of Automotive Engineering THU and the academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) serves as the Dean and chief scientist of the Institute.
Under the support of Topwin Group, the new Institute is committed to the research on new energy vehicles and the fundamental research and technical innovation on core technology of intelligent connected vehicles based on the construction of Department of Automotive Engineering and the participation of Department of Electrical Engineering, so as to drive China’s core vehicle technology more advanced in the world. It will also become a high-level open technical transformation platform for the innovative research results of related disciplines in Tsinghua University, so as to boost the efficient transformation and industrializing application of the results in new-energy and intelligent connected vehicles. It will exert an important demonstration effect.
You Zheng who is vice-President of Tsinghua University, He Chuan, vice-President of Southwest Jiaotong University, Prof. Ou-yang Minggao, Academician of Department of Automotive Engineering in Tsinghua University, Shi Lin, Chairman of Topwin Group, Li Lizhong, executive vice-President of Chery Automobile, Yin Xiaohui, vice General Manager of China Aerospace Automotive Co., Ltd., and Zhang Linwu, Deputy Director of China Development Bank, as well as more 100 representatives from Tsinghua University, Southwest Jiaotong University, Chery Automobile, China Aerospace Automotive Co., Ltd., and China Development Bank, attended the establishment ceremony. President Qiu Yong extended cordial welcome and heartfelt thanks to guests on the behalf of Tsinghua University in his address. He stressed the importance of establishment of the new Institute, believing that as an important mainstay industry in the world, the automobile industry is deeply integrated with such technical fields of artificial intelligence, big data and energy resources. The revolutionary change is taking place in the automobile industry, and it will exert an important influence on the development of the whole society and economy. Tsinghua University should take the initiative to meet changes and challenges, and it will play a vital role in guide of academic subjects and talent cultivation to promote the development and progress of China’s automobile industry and technology and help China’s change from a big auto nation to a strong auto one.
Qiu said that establishing the new Institute is another important measuretaken byTsinghua University to advance the interdisciplinary research. Since starting the reform of scientific research system and mechanism, Tsinghnua University always take the interdisciplinary research as an important task,andsuccessively establish seven interdisciplinary research institutes, namely, the Intelligent Unmanned System Research Center, the Intelligent Connected Vehicles and Traffic Research Center, the Flexible Electronic Technical Research Center, the Workshop on Brain and Artificial Intelligence, the Future Laboratory, the Artificial Intelligence Institute and the Big Data Research Center. The Interdiscipline is not merely a concept or an initiative but it tends to build an efficient platform and establish an effective mechanism to boost the constant development of innovative technology and thinking.
He added that serving the major national strategies is a mission and responsibility of Tsinghua people. Tsinghua University carried out comprehensive reforms in an all-round way in 2018 to speed up the construction of the “world-class university and discipline” . It has made a series of important results in academic scientific research and global strategies. So he hoped the new Institute can complement its advantages for collaborative innovation with cooperators so as continuously to boost the cooperation up to a higher level and yield substantial results.

According to Prof. Li Jianqiu who is Secretary of the Party Committee of Department of Automotive Engineeringin Tsinghua University, the changes of automotive technology brings historic opportunities to us; General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out in the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) visit in 2014 that “the new-energy automobile is the only road for Chinese automobile industry from large to strong”. In recent years, the Department of Automotive Engineering THU could seize opportunities and had made new achievements in discipline construction and talent cultivation with its ceaseless endeavors in the field of new-energy and intelligent automobiles, so that it can further enlarge its industrial influences. He believed under the leadership of CAE Academician Li Jun, the new Institute will become not only an interdisciplinary research platform in Tsinghua University and a new-concept and new-technology demonstration platform inside and outside the University, but also a platform of communication, popularization and application for cooperation between the university and enterprises. The Department of Automotive Engineering also does its utmost to provide services and supports to the new Institute. Finally, he congratulated beforehand that the new Institute can make more technical breakthroughs and lead the industrial development in the future.

The establishment of the Institute for New Technology Concept Vehicles is an inevitable choice with the strategic insight in the deeply reforming trend in the automotive field, Prof. Kang Chongqing who is Director of THU Department of Electrical Engineering said, and the Department of Electrical Engineering has years of research results. He hoped the communication platform has been set up for collaboration in scientific research and the sharing of achievements with the establishment of the new Institute; all cooperators should unite in a concerted effort and work together to make greater achievements in scientific innovation.

Prof. Chen Yuan expressed his warm congratulation on the establishment of the Institute for New Technology Concept Vehicles THU in his summary speech. He said that the new Institute has officially established for three months of urgent preparations since the official launch of four parties’ cooperative development of the new concept vehicles in August this year. The new Institute has the unique advantages for development because the four research institutes , namely, Tsinghua University, Southwest Jiaotong University, Chery Automobile andChina Aerospace Automotive Co., Ltd.,boast substantial strengths in related fields at home. The four institutes will further jointly conduct researches on the basis of construction of the new Institute. Prof. Chen believed they are fully capable of achieving the breakthroughs in research and development of new technology to further boost the technological revolution of automobile industry by virtue of their advantages, wisdom and existing technical results. Chen stressed that after the establishment of the new Institute, the key technology for new concept vehicles will usher in a substantive R&D stage. The new Institute should seize the development opportunities, adhere to the striving direction, face squarely the problems that arise in their work, dare to be the first and never waver in carrying this cause forward to a brighter future. Furthermore, it should persist in innovation and adhere to opening-up for competition and cooperation in the future. He believed that the new Institute will be certain to realize the anticipated goals under the full supports of Tsinghua University and other institutes, and become a R&D institute of automotive new technology advanced at home and first-rate in the world. According to Academician Li Jun, the establishment ofInstitute for New Technology Concept VehiclesinTsinghua Universityis an important move of buildingpowerful automobile countryin the New Era, and isthenewentrepreneurshipfor Tsinghua University to explore the cooperation by production, study and research of automobiles. In the future, the new Institute will remain true to the original aspiration and keep the mission firmly to make its contribution to construction of powerful automobile country.

In the ceremony, Shi Lin and You Zheng signed the cooperative agreements on the behalf of both parties, and Chen Yuan and Qiu Yong unveiled the nameplate for the establishment of Institute of New Technology Concept Vehicles.

Both Department of Automotive Engineering and Department of Electrical Engineering have good research foundation in new-energy and intelligent vehicle fields, and have taken the lead in keynational special projects and the major special nuclear high-based projects during the 13thFive Year Plan in electric automobiles, hybrid electric vehicles, fuel cell cars and intelligent vehicles. The related disciplinary teams of Department of Automotive Engineering THU organized the demonstration application of new energy vehicles and intelligent vehicles for 2022 Winter Olympics and the planning and design of intelligent transportation system and intelligent vehicles for the Xiongan New Area. All this plays a leading role in related fields and industries. The establishment of the new Institute will make THU’s scientific researches in the automotive field to a new level.
