Recently, OSA (the Optical Society of America) announced the list of new fellows in 2021. A total of 118 scientists were elected this year, including Zhou Weidong, an alumnus admitted to the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics of Tsinghua University in 1988 and a professor of the University of Texas at Arlington in the United States.

Zhou Weidong

Zhou Weidong received his bachelor's and master's degrees from EEA of Tsinghua University in 1993 and 1996, and his doctor's degree from the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 2001. He is currently a professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington.

Zhou Weidong and his team have made important achievement in the fields of photonic crystal plate optics and thin film photonics, especially thin film lasers and imagers, integrated silicon photonics and flexible optoelectronics. He has written and co-authored more than 330 journals and conference reports, including more than 60 invited conference speeches and more than 50 seminar speeches. This time he was elected because of his important contribution to photonic crystal film laser and hybrid nano-film optoelectronics.

The Optical Society of America, founded in 1916, is an authoritative international academic organization in the field of optics in the world. OSA Fellow, for which the electing procedures are very strict, is the highest academic honor awarded by the OSA to an expert in this field. The final OSA Fellow must be regarded as a scholar "who has made a significant contribution to the progress of optics". According to the OSA Articles of Association, the number of fellows cannot exceed 10 percent of the total number of OSA members, while the number elected each year is only about 0.5 percent of the current total number of members.
