Abstract

Power sector reforms and rapid technological progress are changing the features of the industry in many countries. In particular, network utilities are at the centre of the transition towards a sustainable electricity sector. Smart distribution grids will empower the customers and change their relationship with the utilities. As a result, the traditional roles of the stakeholders are changing as well as new actors entering the sector. Consequently the economics and business models of the future sector will be different but very significant and important. I discuss some business economics principals and business model aspects of network utilities. I will then discuss some related matters such as aggregators, customer behaviour, developing countries, regulation, and innovation.
