As an emerging research direction and hotspot in the field of DC power grids, DC transformers are key equipment for efficient integration and conversion of new energy and energy storage, which have received extensive attention from the international academia and industry. However, the research on the theories and equipment technologies of medium and high-voltage large-capacity DC transformers is still in the early stage, and there are still many scientific challenges and technical problems in the process of practical application and large-scale generalization.
In order to promote academic exchanges and the application technology progress in DC transformer related fields, China Electrotechnical Society is scheduled to hold the “Youth Salon of China Association for Science and Technology and the 15th Youth Salon of China Electrotechnical Society" during the annual academic conference of China Electrotechnical Society on September 26, 2021, focusing on the frontier technologies and development trend of DC transformers, discussing the latest research progress, technical bottlenecks and challenges in this field, expanding academic exchanges among young scholars in the field of DC transformers of China, and strengthening the inter-disciplinary integration. Zhao Biao, associate professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering and director of the Power Conversion Research Office, DC Research Center of Energy Internet Research Institute, Tsinghua University served as the convener of this salon.

Brief about the Salon Convener
Zhao Biao, Associate Professor and Doctoral Supervisor of Department of Electrical Engineering, Tsinghua University, IEEE Senior Member; He is mainly engaged in the research on flexible DC transmission and distribution, modular multi-level converters, DC transformers, and high-power power electronic devices, etc. His research achievements are applied to flexible and direct converter valves and DC transformers of Xidian Power Systems, Rongxin Huike, Beijing Sifang and many other companies.
In the past 5 years, he has presided over more than 10 scientific research projects, including 2 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation; published more than 80 SCI/EI papers in domestic and foreign journals and conferences, which were cited more than 5000 times; published 1 domestic monograph as the first author, participated in the compilation of 1 international monograph, applied for and was granted more than 20 invention patents; won 3 provincial and ministerial scientific and technological achievement awards including the Science and Technology Progress Award of China Machinery Industry Association. He was selected as Elsevier 2019 and 2020 China Highly Cited Scholars, selected into the 5th Young Talents Promotion Project of China Association for Science and Technology, and appointed the convener for the first power electronic transformer international standard IEC/SC 22F/AHG 6 working group.
