From November 6 to 7, under the organization of Professor Kang Chongqing from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA) at Tsinghua University, more than 30 experts, scholars, and graduate students from 13 domestic institutions in the field of electrical power attended the 13th China-Korea Bilateral Academic Seminar on Electrical Engineering in Gwangju, South Korea. The seminar aimed to promote communication and exchange between the two countries in the low-carbon transition of power systems, as well as to fully discuss the opportunities and challenges faced by power systems under the carbon neutrality goal. The theme of this bilateral academic seminar was "Carbon Neutral Power Systems," where experts and scholars from both countries exchanged achievements and experiences in the field of low-carbon power systems, addressing core technological challenges in achieving carbon neutrality. This seminar was jointly funded by the Resilient Autonomous Grid Research Center (RAGRC) at Korea University, the Korea Institute of Electrical Engineers (KIEE), and the Carbon Neutrality Research Institute of Tsinghua University.

The Chinese delegation included 30 researchers from 13 institutions, including Tsinghua University, North China Electric Power University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Chongqing University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, Southeast University, Northeast Electric Power University, Peking University, Wuhan University, Hohai University, UHV Company of China Southern Power Grid, and Nari Technology. The Korean delegation consisted of over 100 experts, scholars, and graduate students from Korea University, Yonsei University, Seoul National University, Kwangwoon University, Sungkyunkwan University, Sogang University, Korea University of Energy Technology, Kyunggi University, Keimyung University, Chung-Ang University, the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning, and Hitachi Energy. The seminar also invited Professor Ian A. Hiskens, Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Power Systems from the University of Michigan, and Professor Tim Green, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering from Imperial College London, to give invited presentations. The forum was chaired by Professor Gilsoo Jang from Korea University and Professor Kang Chongqing from Tsinghua University, with Associate Professor Minhan Jang from Kwangwoon University, Assistant Researcher Guo Hongye from Tsinghua University, and Dr. Sungwoo Kang from Korea University serving as co-secretaries.

Professor Ian A. Hiskens and Professor Tim Green Give Invited Lectures

The conference delved deeply into the latest research achievements in planning, operation, protection, and control of high-renewable energy power systems under the carbon neutrality goal in both China and Korea. Experts from both countries exchanged insights in six sub-forums, focusing on topics such as "Power System Optimization and Market Operation for Carbon Neutrality," "Application of Power Electronics in Modern Power Systems," "Control and Stability of High Proportion IBR Power Systems," "Smart Grid Technologies in Distribution Networks," and "HVDC Application Cases." During the seminar, Chinese experts, including Professor Zhou Ming from North China Electric Power University, Assistant Researcher Guo Hongye from Tsinghua University, Professor Qu Ronghai from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Assistant Researcher Wang Jianxiao from Peking University, Ph.D. student Li Chen from Wuhan University, Researcher Bao Minglei from Zhejiang University, Dr. Zhan Changjiang, Deputy Chief Engineer at Nari Technology, Associate Researcher Li Xiaoqian from Tsinghua University, and Researcher Liu Hang from the UHV Company of China Southern Power Grid, presented specialized reports. Korean experts, including Professor Hongseok Kim from Sogang University, Assistant Professor Jip Kim from Korea University of Energy Technology, Associate Professor Duehee Lee from Konyang University, Assistant Professor Shenghui Cui from Seoul National University, Professor Jae-Jung Jung from Keimyung University, Associate Professor Minhan Yoon from Kwangwoon University, Assistant Professor Gyu-Sub Lee from Seoul National University, Assistant Professor Jae-Won Chang from Chung-Ang University, Researcher Jae-Young Park from the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning, and Dr. Arman Hassanpoor, R&D Manager at Hitachi Energy, also gave academic reports. Additionally, a student paper poster exhibition was held, and based on votes from the attendees, Minhyeok Chang (Ph.D. student at Korea University), Cai Xiao (Ph.D. student at Tsinghua University), and Wang Mengyuan (Postdoctoral Fellow at Shanghai Jiao Tong University) were awarded the Best Poster Paper Award.

At the conference, Assistant Researcher Guo Hongye from Tsinghua University presented an academic report titled "Progress of China’s Carbon Market and the Coupling Mechanism of Electricity-Carbon Trading" in the sub-forum "Power System Optimization and Market Operation for Carbon Neutrality." Associate Researcher Li Xiaoqian from Tsinghua University gave an academic report on "Key Technologies and Applications of Flexible DC Traction Power Supply Systems for Urban Rail Transit" in the sub-forum "HVDC Application Cases." Associate Researcher Du Ershun from the Low-Carbon Energy Laboratory at Tsinghua University served as the chair of the sub-forum "Smart Grid Technologies in Distribution Networks."

The Chinese delegation was also invited by the Korean side to visit the Korea Power Exchange (KPX), the Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KERI), and the 9th Bitgreen International Power Technology Expo (BIXPO). During these visits, the Chinese participants engaged in in-depth discussions with Korean engineers, gaining further understanding of the development, operational status, and advancements in electrical and electronic technologies within the Korean power system.

Introduction to the China-Korea Bilateral Academic Seminar

The China-Korea Bilateral Academic Forum in Electrical Engineering, jointly initiated by Professor Kang Chongqing from Tsinghua University and Korean professors, mainly focuses on academic discussions related to large-scale renewable energy grid integration and student poster exhibitions. Since its inception in 2012, the forum has been held 13 times. Participating universities include Tsinghua University, North China Electric Power University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Chongqing University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, Southeast University, Northeast Electric Power University, Peking University, Wuhan University, Hohai University, Korea University, Yonsei University, Seoul National University, Kwangwoon University, Sungkyunkwan University, Sogang University, Keimyung University, Korea University of Energy Technology, Kyunggi University, Chung-Ang University, and many others. The forum has led to a series of cooperative efforts between China and Korea in research, short-term courses, and personnel exchanges.
