To enrich campus life and enhance communication between teachers and students, the Faculty Union of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA) held a unique basketball friendship match between faculty members and freshmen on October 18 at the West Sports Gymnasium.
As the referee's whistle blew, the friendly basketball game began, and an intense and exciting match unfolded. The faculty team took the lead right from the start, with their seamless teamwork and precise shooting quickly giving them an advantage. The faculty players continued to communicate effectively on the court, using accurate passes and active positioning to create shooting opportunities, steadily expanding their lead.
The freshmen team, however, was not to be outdone and launched a counterattack. Freshmen players scored with accurate mid-range shots, and some made sharp breakthroughs to drive to the basket, creating scoring opportunities. Others sank free throws, contributing valuable points to the freshman team. Every offensive play was full of passion and energy, with the freshmen players proving their strength and potential through their actions.
Throughout the game, exciting moments such as intercepts, clever ball handling, and spectacular layups kept the audience at the edge of their seats. The tense and thrilling atmosphere left everyone holding their breath. Every exquisite pass and crucial basket sparked applause and cheers from the audience, driving the game to wave after wave of excitement.
During the halftime break, a special three-point shooting activity was organized. Players quickly formed teams of five, competing in a test of skill and accuracy. The freshmen team began strong, making several consecutive shots with excellent form. The faculty team responded with a beautiful swish, leveling the score. The freshmen team kept the pressure on, sinking two more shots, and the score was tied at 4-4, leading to an overtime shootout. Ultimately, the faculty team triumphed with a steady performance in the halftime three-point contest.
After a fierce competition, the faculty team, relying on their rich experience and excellent teamwork, won the game. The audience applauded, paying tribute to the outstanding performances of both teams. After the game, Professor Wu Wenchuan, Deputy Party Secretary and Chairman of the Faculty Union, granted special trophies to both the faculty and freshman teams. The faculty players also presented prizes to the participants in the halftime shooting activity. In addition, all faculty team members gave individual gifts to the freshman players. After the award ceremony, Professor Wu Wenchuan delivered a closing speech to summarize the exciting event.
This friendly match helped strengthen the bond between teachers and students, fostered teamwork and a sense of collective honor, and upheld the sports spirit of "No Sports, No Tsinghua." Moving forward, the Faculty Union of EEA will further organize various cultural and recreational activities, creating more platforms for interaction and communication, and further promoting the development of campus culture.
Reflections from Participants
Qiu Lixiang:
"How could a rookie compete with veterans?" This was my takeaway from the afternoon's game. The teachers' tight defense and unexpected fast breaks gave our freshman team a lot of trouble, and they demonstrated the immense strength of Tsinghua's championship-winning team. However, despite the challenge, we didn’t give up. From a one-sided first half to a more competitive second half, we may have lost, but we proved ourselves through effort and perseverance. This match not only deepened friendships among students but also enhanced communication between teachers and students. I hope to continue improving my basketball skills and look forward to the next competition with the teachers!
Wu Jiaxi:
Today, three classes from EEA and Class 41 of Weiyang College formed a basketball team to compete in a friendly match with the faculty team. There were four quarters of play, during which the faculty demonstrated excellent team coordination and impressive physical fitness in both defense and fast breaks. On the freshmen team, every player showed a spirit of not giving up and fought hard, scoring well. The game also featured fun shooting activities during halftime. In the end, the faculty team awarded us trophies, and the Department's Deputy Party Secretary gave a speech, strengthening our relationship with the faculty members. I hope to have more opportunities to participate in such activities in the future.
Liu Dingyu:
On October 17, with the enthusiastic and thoughtful organization of our teachers and counselors, the freshman-faculty basketball match officially kicked off. As a student from Weiyang-EL41, I was fortunate to participate in the game, which provided me with countless exciting moments and fond memories. On the court, we witnessed the teachers’ coordinated defense, close teamwork, selfless passing, and the friendly basketball atmosphere. In this match, we were both students and friends, making connections through basketball, striving together, laughing together, and sweating together. This game made us feel EEA’s warmth and marked a beautiful beginning to our undergraduate journey at Tsinghua. The score didn’t matter. "No sports, no Tsinghua." Youth never ends, and we are all young.
Li Ruicheng:
After arriving at Tsinghua University, I was deeply impressed by the slogan "No Sports, No Tsinghua." This basketball match further immersed me in Tsinghua's strong sports culture. In the intense competition with the teachers, I realized my technical shortcomings and admired the teachers' excellent teamwork. This game gave us a chance to compete with the teachers and greatly deepened our teacher-student bond.
