On the afternoon of June 29, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA) held a grand graduation ceremony and launching ceremony for the year of 2024 in the Great Hall. This year, for the first time, students from the Weiyang Academy’s electrical engineering program participated, along with postdoctoral researchers from the department. Graduates, postdoctoral researchers, some faculty members, alumni representatives, and student parent representatives all witnessed this sacred and unforgettable moment. To allow more family, friends, and alumni to share in the graduates’ joy, the ceremony was also streamed live online. The ceremony was hosted by Wu Sirui, a doctoral graduate, and Pan Tengfei, an undergraduate graduate from the classes graduated in 2024. At 2 PM, the ceremony commenced with the solemn and majestic national anthem, filling the Great Hall with a dignified and warm atmosphere.

Yu Xinjie, party secretary of EEA, delivered a speech

Yu Xinjie extended warm congratulations to all graduates, sincerely welcomed all guests, and expressed heartfelt thanks to all sectors of society that have cared for and supported the department. He then introduced the career paths, employment regions, and industry distribution of the 2024 graduates: this year, the department graduated 73 doctoral students, 57 master’s students, and a total of 112 undergraduate students from both the department and Weiyang Academy’s electrical engineering program. Among them, 102 students secured employment directly. The employment regions are widespread, covering 20 provincial administrative areas. In terms of industry distribution, the power and electrical sectors remain the mainstream for graduates, reflecting their commitment to the development of the national power and electrical industries. Yu Xinjie congratulated the students once again and encouraged all graduates and postdoctoral researchers to continue to uphold the academic standards learned during their time at school, explore their potential, and find and pursue a lifelong career.

Alumni representative Ren Tianting delivered a speech

Ren Tianting, an alumnus graduated in 1994 and founder of Hangzhou Kangfengwei Technology Co., Ltd., was invited to speak as an alumni representative. He warmly congratulated all graduates and expressed high respect for the teachers present. Mr. Ren shared his work experience, detailing his journey of founding Kangfengwei Technology in Hangzhou after returning from the United States. He emphasized the distinction between “learning” and “practicing”, encouraging students to apply their knowledge in practice to realize its value. Additionally, he referenced a passage from Lv Kun’s “Groaning Words” that categorizes talents into three levels: clever and eloquent, bold and heroic, and deep and substantial. He urged students to embrace practical challenges in their future work, avoid internal conflicts, and make decisive decisions. Finally, Mr. Ren expressed his expectations for the students graduated in 2024, wishing them to become heroes in their respective fields, possessing both charm and depth, extensive knowledge, and extraordinary courage.

The deputy dean of the department, Zhang Pinjia, announced the list of undergraduate graduates for the class of 2024. Shen Chen, chair of the degree committee, announced the lists of master’s and doctoral graduates, while He Jinliang, chair of the academic committee, announced the postdoctoral graduates.

Doctoral graduate Ren Chunpin, master’s graduate Tian Xin, and undergraduate graduate Liu Yanhong, along with Si Fangyuan from Beijing Jiaotong University, spoke as representatives of graduates and postdoctoral researchers.

Ren Chunpin delivered a speech

As the doctoral graduate representative, Ren Chunpin reflected on her five years as a doctoral student, emphasizing the academic ideals and patriotic sentiments instilled by Tsinghua. She shared challenges and achievements faced during her experiments and how to translate research outcomes into practical applications, promoting the development of the national power sector. She expressed sincere gratitude to the school, teachers, family, and alumni for their support and encouraged everyone to continue striving to create their own legends in the future.

Tian Xin delivered a speech

Tian Xin fondly recalled her seven years of study and life at Tsinghua. She emphasized the spirit of perseverance, dedication to service, and exploration instilled by Tsinghua. She shared her personal growth experiences, including academic challenges, student work, and social practice, showcasing Tsinghua students’ love and contributions to the power industry. In conclusion, she wished all graduates to aspire to great ambitions, hold onto their visions, and write magnificent chapters that do justice to their era and youth!

Liu Yanhong delivered a speech

Liu Yanhong reflected on the extraordinary experiences of their cohort during the pandemic, emphasizing the invaluable time spent growing with classmates and learning from teachers. They are now set to embark on a new journey, becoming the main force in constructing a new power system and contributing to achieving carbon neutrality goals. He expressed gratitude and blessings to the alma mater, teachers, and classmates, encouraging everyone to cherish the past and embrace the future.

Si Fangyuan delivered a speech

Si Fangyuan recounted his growth journey in EEA, highlighting the influence of the school motto “Self-discipline and Social Commitment” and the department motto “Be rigorous in study and upright in character.” In the department, he accumulated valuable academic and life experiences, forming a rigorous academic attitude and upright character. After graduation, he will continue teaching and research at Beijing Jiaotong University, passing on the spirit of Tsinghua. He thanked his alma mater and mentors for their guidance and encouraged classmates to keep striving and give back to Tsinghua with fruitful results.

Liang Xidong delivered a speech

Following this, Liang Xidong, a professor in the department and dean of Weiyang Academy, spoke as a representative of the faculty. He warmly congratulated the graduates for successfully completing their studies and preparing to step onto a new life stage. Liang expressed delight in seeing the first group of Weiyang Academy’s electrical engineering students complete their undergraduate education, hoping they will regard EEA as their home. He then shared his own experiences at Tsinghua, emphasizing that university education is not just about imparting knowledge but also about fostering students’ deep understanding of core course concepts, applying theory to practice, and developing lifelong learning habits. Liang reflected on the influence of teachers during his student days and encouraged students to continuously improve themselves, grasp core issues in their disciplines, and enhance their scientific literacy in future studies and research. Finally, Mr. Liang wished all graduates good health, happiness, successful careers, and a bright future, while inheriting and promoting the excellent tradition of EEA: “Be rigorous in study and upright in character.”

Li Jing delivered a speech

Li Jing, the mother of undergraduate graduate Sun Yingcong, spoke as a parent representative. She first congratulated the graduates and thanked Tsinghua University and the department’s teachers and counselors. She then reflected on the challenges and growth faced by students during the pandemic, expressing pride in their independence and efforts. She emphasized the importance of maintaining health and engaging in physical exercise, encouraging graduates to keep striving and remain true to their original aspirations, contributing to the development of the nation and its people. In conclusion, she congratulated the graduates once again and wished everyone health and success.

Appointment of alumni class advisors for the 2024 graduates

During the graduation ceremony, alumni class advisors for the 2024 graduates were appointed. Zheng Zedong, deputy dean of the department and secretary of the alumni association, announced the list of appointed alumni class advisors for the 2024 graduates, which includes: Song Haotian, Bai Lilai, Xu Xin, Zhou Xiaoqiang, Liu Weibao, and Su Bowen for the undergraduate class; Zhang Tianyu, Zhu Ningsheng, and Liu Xuan for the master’s class; and Fang Xichen, Wang Zhe, and Sheng Yujie for the doctoral class. Kang Chongqing and Zheng Zedong presented appointment letters to the appointed class advisors.

Presentation of EEA Student Career Development Contribution Award

During the graduation ceremony, the 2023-2024 EEA Student Career Development Contribution Award was presented. Wu Wenchuan, deputy secretary of the department, announced the award recipients: Zou Xiaobing and Lin Jin. Wu Wenchuan presented the awards to the winners.

Recognition of graduates who served as counselors and assistants

Deputy secretary Yu Zhanqing announced the list of graduates who served as undergraduate political counselors and graduate moral education assistants: Wang Qihang, Tian Xin, Wu Sirui, Wang Siyuan, Lan Jian, Liu Xuan, Li Xiaoyu, Fang Xichen, Sheng Yujie, and Wang Qi. Yu Xinjie and Yu Zhanqing presented awards to the recognized graduates.

Recognition of outstanding undergraduates

Outstanding graduates were also recognized during the ceremony. Zheng Zedong announced the list of outstanding undergraduate graduates, which includes: Liu Zhicheng, Liu Yanhong, and Sun Yingcong for the Tsinghua University Outstanding Graduate Award; Lu Liangyuchen, Ye Weiyi, Liu Weibao, Du Bojun, Li Zhongze, Wang Han, Chen Sheng’an, Zheng Haoyu, Hou Enze, Guo Xu, Cheng Zhuoxiao, and Pei Jiaqi for the Tsinghua University Good Graduate Award; and Lu Liangyuchen, Liu Weibao, Liu Yanhong, Sun Yingcong, and Song Haotian for the Beijing Outstanding Graduate Award. Liang Xidong and Zheng Zedong presented awards to the winners.

Wu Wenchuan announced the list of outstanding graduate students, which includes: Wang Siyuan, Ren Chunpin, and Huang Xiaoyan for the Tsinghua University Outstanding Doctoral Graduate Award; Xu Han for the Tsinghua University Outstanding Master’s Graduate Award; and Wang Tianyu, Wang Siyuan, Wang Guanzhu, Tian Xin, and Ren Chunpin for the Beijing Outstanding Graduate Award. Ren Tianting and Wu Wenchuan presented awards to the winners.

Recognition of outstanding graduate theses

Outstanding graduate theses were recognized during the graduation ceremony. Deputy dean of the department, Lu Chao, announced the list of graduates who received awards for outstanding graduate theses, which includes: Wang Siyuan, Feng Cheng, Ren Chunpin, Su Yifan, Zhang Qinghao, Chen Huan, Zheng Jialin, and Huang Xiaoyan for the Tsinghua University Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award; Wang Guanzhu, Xu Han, and Chen Aizhu for the Tsinghua University Outstanding Master’s Thesis Award. Kang Chongqing and Lu Chao presented awards to the winners.

Kang Chongqing delivered a speech

Amidst warm applause, Kang Chongqing took the stage and first extended heartfelt congratulations to all graduates. He reflected on the achievements of the department’s faculty and students over the past year, sharing the brilliant accomplishments of the department’s teachers in education, team building, and scientific research. He expressed that whether in academic research, social service, sports, or cultural activities, students have vividly showcased the enthusiasm of contemporary youth. It is the students’ emergence in various fields that has contributed to every step of the department’s progress.

Kang Chongqing’s message to graduates

Following this, Kang Chongqing cleverly utilized three pairs of keywords from electrical engineering: “fundamental wave” and “harmonic wave,” “valley” and “peak,” “trigger” and “reset,” to offer three pieces of advice to students: First, be adept at grasping the core of issues and recognizing the mainstream of personal development; in the face of confusion and interference, remember the department motto of “Be upright in character,” maintaining self-discipline and innovating; Second, calmly confront challenges at work, fear not momentary setbacks, inherit Tsinghua’s spirit of action over words, forge ahead with determination, and ultimately share in the joy of success; Third, always retain a youthful spirit of exploration, dare to seek new states of life while remaining vigilant, reflecting on oneself regularly, and staying true to one’s original intentions.

Kang Chongqing presented a couplet as parting words

Finally, Kang Chongqing presented a poem to graduates: “Yesterday, hearts intertwined, ambitions woven into a tapestry of hope, and passions harmonized in vibrant hues; Yesterday, disciplines converged like rivers flowing together, minds melding and all thoughts orchestrated into a breathtaking symphony of youth; Tomorrow, radiant stars will ascend, illuminating paths we shall boldly trace, and trials we will welcome as stepping stones; Tomorrow, we will scale new heights, dreams unfurling like banners, and careers we will compose into an epic song of a promising future..” He stated that no matter where students go, they will always be graduates of EEA, and Tsinghua University and EEA will always be their home, encouraging them to come back often!

At the end of the ceremony, everyone sang the university anthem of Tsinghua University, concluding the 2024 graduation ceremony and launching ceremony for EEA. The powerful singing conveyed the graduates’ affection for their alma mater and aspirations for the future, wishing all graduates and postdoctoral researchers of the class of 2024 great success ahead and a promising future!
