On January 13, the 100MW/200MWh Four-Quadrant Power Regulation System jointly developed by Tsinghua University, Beijing Electric Power Equipment Co., Ltd., and China Electric Power Engineering Consulting Group Co., Ltd., passed the technical appraisal organized by the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering. The appraisal committee, composed of Academician Chen Weijiang and others, unanimously agreed that “the project’s achievements can provide important technical support for the integration of new energy sources and are at the forefront of international high-voltage direct-hanging energy storage technology.”

At the meeting

The appraisal meeting, organized by the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering, was chaired by Academician Chen Weijiang of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Experts, leaders, and guests from State Grid Corporation of China, State Grid Economic and Technological Research Institute, China Electric Power Engineering Consulting Group Co., Ltd., China Energy Engineering Group Equipment Co., Ltd., China Three Gorges Corporation Science and Technology Research Institute, National High-Voltage Direct Current Transmission Engineering Standardization Technical Committee, China Electric Power Research Institute Co., Ltd., Xi'an XD Electric Power System Co., Ltd., Beijing Power Grid Direct Current Engineering Co., Ltd., East China Survey and Design Institute Co., Ltd., Tsinghua University, North China Electric Power University, Beijing Jiaotong University, and other units attended the appraisal meeting.

Topology Structure of the Four-Quadrant Power Regulation System

Energy storage systems are important technical means to improve the large-scale integration of new energy sources and solve the problem of insufficient active support capacity. In response to the problems of harmonic oscillation, low energy conversion efficiency, and high requirements for battery management systems in existing large-capacity energy storage systems using distributed parallel schemes, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA) at Tsinghua University, together with Beijing Electric Power Equipment Co., Ltd., and China Electric Power Engineering Consulting Group Co., Ltd., innovatively proposed the “Four-Quadrant Power Regulation System.”

Basic Principles of Cooperative Four-Quadrant Power Regulation

This system integrates the functions of energy storage and reactive power compensation, achieving four-quadrant operation. It can perform 100MW of active regulation output and support up to 140MVar of reactive power, providing inertia support for the new energy power system. It can respond to grid scheduling commands within 5ms, achieve active power regulation from 0 to 100% within hundreds of milliseconds, and maintain SOC balance within 5%.

The four-quadrant power regulation system can quickly respond to grid frequency and peak demand, providing inertia support for the new type power system. It effectively solves the stability problems after the grid connection of large-scale new energy stations and provides strong equipment support for building a new type power system.
