On August 23, the Tsinghua campus was bathed in bright sunshine and crisp autumn air. The Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA) welcomed its new students admitted in 2023. At six in the morning, the volunteer teams for the welcome event moved supplies to the south side of Building C, the designated welcome point. By seven, everything was set up and ready. There was a sense of eager anticipation among the volunteers, filled with smiles and high spirits, waiting for the arrival of the new students.

With colorful red arches, fluttering flags lining the main road, cute mascots representing various departments, bright and eye-catching signs, and adorable Pikachu patterns, along with abundant gift packages, all conveyed warm wishes and expectations for the passing summer and early autumn. They silently welcomed the new occupants of this space, saying, “Welcome, freshmen!”

Compared to previous years, the welcome event in 2023 was livelier. Most students came for registration with their parents, and the sound of laughter and joy filled the entire campus, adding more happiness to the surroundings. Some students arrived alone, showing their independence and self-reliance. With the help of teachers, student advisors, and volunteers, the new students at EEA completed the registration process at the welcome point and in the dorms in an orderly manner, gradually getting accustomed to their new environment in preparation for their university life.

Teachers, including Song Qiang, head teacher of students admitted in 2023, as well as Peng Lisha, and Guo Hongye, arrived at the registration point to welcome the new students. The core students who came to Tsinghua in advance actively participated in the welcome process. Thanks to everyone’s joint efforts, the new students no longer felt the unease of being in a new environment but instead gained anticipation of becoming the new inhabitants of this campus.

Around 9:00 a.m., Professor Kang Chongqing, Dean of EEA, Professor Zheng Zedong, Deputy Secretary of Party Committee of EEA, and Assistant Dean Hu Wei visited the welcome event to check on its progress and guide its smooth operation. They warmly communicated with the new students and their parents, and took photos with them together.

Tsinghua’s welcome day became livelier as time went on. Around 10:00 in the morning, Qiu Yong, Secretary of the University’s Party Committee, and his team came to EEA’s welcome point to express their support to the students and faculty involved in the event. He had friendly interactions with the new students of EEA, inquiring about their hometowns, their journey to Beijing, and expressing gratitude to those involved in the welcome event. Qiu Yong also asked Professor Kang Chongqing about the status of EEA’s undergraduate students for the year. Later, he had a detailed conversation with the newly registered students of EEA, asking about their families and their academic situation, encouraging them to be adventurous and hardworking in their university life, and become outstanding Tsinghua students who live up to the expectations of their country and era.

In 2023, EEA admitted a total of 102 undergraduate students, the highest number since 2020, including 83 males and 19 females. There were also 5 students from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan and other regions. The mainland students came from more than 80 different high schools, with around 15% being minority applicants and 15% hailing from western provinces. The students born after 2005 were full of confidence and vitality, injecting new energy into EEA.

On this day, Tsinghua campus was filled with a festive atmosphere, and the welcome event unfolded energetically. The new students, filled with hope and expectations for the future, entered the warm family of EEA. Under the sunlight, laughter and joy filled the air, marking the exciting beginning of their university journey.
