On the afternoon of April 27, the memorial service for Academician Lu Qiang was held in the lecture hall of Li Zhaoji Science and Technology Building, Tsinghua University. Teachers and students in attendance deeply mourned Academician Lu Qiang, a “great teacher” who has long made selfless and indelible outstanding contributions to the development of Tsinghua University, the discipline of electrical science and engineering in China, and the development of the power industry, and recalled the noble character and style of learning from Mr. Lu.
Wang Guangqian, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Executive Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the Democratic League, Vice President of Tsinghua University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zeng Rong, Vice President of Tsinghua University, Jiang Peixue, Vice President of Tsinghua University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Han Yingduo, Li Liyang, and Gu Guobiao, Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Luo Jianbin and Chen Weijiang, Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and representatives from some ministries, industries, associations and universities, as well as family members and some students of Academician Lu Qiang, attended the memorial service. The event was chaired by Yu Xinjie, Secretary of Party Committee of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics, Tsinghua University.
Academician Lu Qiang is a famous electrical engineering scientist and educator, the pioneer and founder of the discipline of nonlinear control in modern power systems. He has served as a member of the Standing Committee of the Eighth, Ninth, and Tenth National Committees of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and as Vice Chairman of the Eighth and Ninth Central Committees of the China Democratic League. Academician Lu Qiang has made a series of groundbreaking achievements in the field of electrical engineering and has trained a large number of outstanding talents. He has served as the first chief scientist of the first 973 Project in the field of energy in China, and has made outstanding contributions in linear and nonlinear optimal control of power systems, disaster prevention and mitigation of power systems, digital power systems and compressed air energy storage, etc. He has published many significantly influencing academic works in Chinese and English, and has trained more than 100 electrical engineering professionals. Academician Lu Qiang has devoted a lot of effort and dedicated his life to the development of electrical engineering education and the scientific and technological cause of the power system in China.

After a moment of silence, the participants watched together the commemorative video of academician Lu Qiang. The video comprehensively reviewed the life experience of Academician Lu Qiang, vividly demonstrating Academician Lu Qiang’s character and style as a great teacher.
On behalf of the Central Committee of the Democratic League, Wang Guangqian recalled the outstanding contributions made by Academician Lu Qiang in the fields of automatic control and power system engineering, and expressing deep condolences for Academician Lu Qiang.
Wang Guangqian pointed out that Mr. Lu Qiang’s life is a life of pursuing truth, constantly advancing bravely, and a life of unremitting struggle for the party’s science and education cause. His extraordinary achievements and outstanding contributions are deeply engraved in our hearts, and his noble morality and personal charm are always worth learning and remembering.
Wang Guangqian said that to commemorate Academician Lu Qiang is to learn from his spirit of loving the country and the people, and to strive for the lifelong goal of building a strong science and technology country; we must promote Academician Lu Qiang’s conscious acceptance of the leadership of the Communist Party of China, always adhere to the fine tradition of caring for the people and paying attention to their livelihoods, and learn from his unique personal charm and noble character.
On behalf of the whole industry, Chen Weijiang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, reviewed the outstanding contributions of academician Lu Qiang in academic research and education of electric power engineering, and expressed that we will inherit the will of academician Lu Qiang, and continuously strive for the progress of China’s electric power technology and the prosperous development of the electric power industry, contributing to the realization of Chinese-style modernization and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
On behalf of associations and societies, Shu Yinbiao, Chairman of the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering, and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, entrusted the Secretary-General of the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering, Wang Gang, to read his speech, recalling Academician Lu Qiang’s careful guidance and strong support for the Society and himself, expressing admiration for Academician Lu Qiang’s patriotism and spirits of practicality, dedication, collaboration, education and innovation.
On behalf of disciplines, Ma Weiming, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, entrusted Professor Liu Dezhi of the Naval Engineering University to read his speech, reviewing Academician Lu Qiang’s deep concern and guidance for the scientific research team of the Naval Engineering University and the strong support for the electromagnetic catapult technology project, and expressing gratitude and nostalgia for Academician Lu Qiang.
On behalf of national ministries and commissions, Zheng Fangneng, a second-level inspector of the Ministry of Science and Technology, recalled the guidance and support he received from Academician Lu Qiang during his studies and work at the Ministry of Science and Technology. He reviewed the great contributions made by Academician Lu Qiang in conducting research on China’s energy technology development strategy and formulating China’s energy technology development plan, and expressed his condolences.
On behalf of cooperative units, Li Yaoqiang, Chairman of China National Salt Industry Corporation, recalled the cooperation with Academician Lu Qiang in the comprehensive utilization of salt caves, and talked about the profound knowledge and adventurous spirit of Academician Lu Qiang, which promoted the research and development and implementation of this technology and made outstanding contributions to the large-capacity compressed air energy storage.
On behalf of universities and colleges, Bi Tianshu, Vice President of North China Electric Power University, recalled the help that Academician Lu Qiang had given to the construction of the electrical engineering discipline at North China Electric Power University, as well as his care and support for young teachers, and expressed the highest respect and deep condolences to Academician Lu Qiang.
On behalf of alumni, Li Licheng, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, recalled his acquaintance and academic exchanges with academician Lu Qiang, pointing out Lu Qiang’s outstanding contributions to the development of digital power systems and the construction of the southern power grid, and also pointed out the need to learn from academician Lu Qiang’s idea of closely integrating academic research with engineering practice.
On behalf of teachers, academician Han Yingduo of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, vividly recalled his acquaintance with academician Lu Qiang, reviewed the twists and turns and achievements of working with academician Lu Qiang and other colleagues to carry out linear optimal control research, talked about Lu Qiang’s contributions in the optimal control of power transmission systems, controllable device applications in high-power electronic devices, etc., and expressed his expectation for the new generation of power workers.
On behalf of classmates, Professor Guo Xiqing of China Agricultural University recounted the stories of his years of communication with Academician Lu Qiang, and expressed his deep condolences for the passing of Academician Lu Qiang and his sincere condolences to Lu Qiang’s family.
On behalf of students, Professor Mei Shengwei of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA), Tsinghua University, expressed the greatness of Academician Lu Qiang’s scientific achievements through examples such as the writing of the monograph “Optimal Control of Power Transmission Systems”, and expressed the nobility of Academician Lu Qiang as the most loyal practitioner of Tsinghua’s motto through examples of his cultivation and care for students. He used a famous quote from Marx to express the feeling of losing Mr. Lu: he was an extraordinary person who had achieved greatness and maintained noble character, so much so that it was only when he suddenly left us that we had the opportunity to recognize his greatness and nobility.
On behalf of EEA, Kang Zhongqing, Dean of EEA, stated that in terms of rigorous scholarship, Academician Lu Qiang should be the greatest scholar; in terms of teaching and nurturing talents, Academician Lu Qiang should be the greatest teacher; in terms of being a role model, Mr. Lu Qiang should be the greatest person. EEA will summarize the spirits of the department motto and the university motto contained in this gentleman, so as to better carry forward the cultural heritage of EEA, and enable the teachers and students of EEA to make greater contributions to the prosperity and strength of the country and the progress of human civilization.
To better commemorate Academician Lu Qiang and carry forward his style of far-sightedness and diligent pursuit of truth, EEA of Tsinghua University and student representatives of Academician Lu Qiang jointly launched the “Lu Qiang Lectureship Professor Fund” to support the development of teachers in EEA. Dean Kang Zhongqing, together with student representatives Sun Yuanzhang, Mei Shengwei, and Li Guojie, attended the launch ceremony.
During the free speech session, Yang Qingxin, Chairman of the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering, former President of Tianjin University of Technology and Tianjin Polytechnic University, Wei Hua, former Vice President of Guangxi University, Ju Ping, former Vice President of Hohai University, Chen Weizheng, Professor of Beijing Institute of Technology, Wang Xiangheng, retired teacher of EEA, Jiang Peixue, Vice President of Tsinghua University, and Sun Yuanzhang, former Dean of the College of Electrical Engineering at Wuhan University, recalled the guidance and assistance received during interactions with Academician Lu Qiang, and his great character and noble demeanor, and expressed their deep condolences for Academician Lu Qiang.
Vice President Zeng Rong expressed deep condolences on behalf of Secretary Qiu Yong and President Wang Xiqun, and the faculty and students of Tsinghua University for the unfortunate passing of Academician Lu Qiang, and extended sincere condolences to his family and friends.
Zeng Rong said that Academician Lu Qiang is a world-renowned electrical engineering scientist and the pioneer and founder of China’s non-linear control discipline in the power system. He has made systematic and pioneering outstanding contributions to the development of electrical science and engineering disciplines and the power industry in China. His passing is a great loss to Tsinghua University, as well as to China’s electrical engineering education and energy and power industry.
Zeng Rong pointed out that Academician Lu Qiang’s spirit of learning from practice, innovating from work, teaching from morality, and being upright as a person is very worthy of the younger generation’s learning and reminiscence. Academician Lu Qiang’s life fully embodies the patriotism of Chinese intellectuals, fully embodies the mission of Tsinghua teachers and students to stand tall, and vividly demonstrates the motto “Self-discipline and Social Commitment” of Tsinghua University. We must inherit and continue the career and ideals of Academician Lu Qiang, turn grief into strength, seek for innovation in all work and undertakings, and better build our colleges and universities, educate our students, and serve our society and country.
