On February 9, 2023, the “2022 Annual Meeting of the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering” (CSEE Annual Meeting 2022), hosted by the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering and co-hosted by State Grid Corporation of China, State Power Investment Corporation and China Three Gorges Corporation, was held in Wuhan. With the theme of “Scientific and technological innovation supporting the construction of a new type energy system”, the meeting invited authoritative experts from the industry to conduct exchanges and discussions on technological development in the fields of new type power systems, offshore wind power, nuclear power of high-temperature gas-cooled reactor, and new energy, analyze current problem, opportunities and challenges, explore future development trends and paths, and seek a common future.

An awarding ceremony of “2022 Yu-Hsiu Ku Electrical Engineering Award, China Electric Power Science and Technology Award, and China Electric Power Science and Technology Figure Award” was grandly held at the meeting.

Professor Lu Chao from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics (EEA), Tsinghua University, on behalf of Professor Wu Weihan, winner of the 2022 Yu-Hsiu Ku Electrical Engineering Award, accepted the award from Chairman Shu Yinbiao

The “Yu-Hsiu Ku Electrical Engineering Award”, jointly established by the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering (CSEE) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Power and Energy Society (IEEE PES) in 2010, elects an expert or scholar who has made important contributions to the advancement of electrical engineering technology every year. After being nominated by experts, elected by the International Election Committee and approved by the Standing Council of the Society and the IEEE PES Board of Directors, Professor Wu Weihan of EEA won the “Yu-Hsiu Ku Electrical Engineering Award” in 2022, and he is also EEA’s third professor to receive this honor.

Professor Wu Weihan reviewed the important scientific research work in the award-winning video speech, thanked CSEE and IEEE PES for establishing this important international award, thanked the International Election Committee for their recognition, and thanked the teachers and students of his team for their close cooperation and selfless dedication and the strong support from EEA.

Professor Wu Weihan, one of the pioneers in the overvoltage field of power systems in China, has made important contributions to the numerical calculation of electromagnetic transients and lightning protection of power systems. He deserves this honor.

Awarding Ceremony for 2022 Electric Power Science and Technology Award

The Electric Power Science and Technology Award of China is one of the first 26 social power awards established after the reform of the National Science and Technology Award. It opens to the whole society and the electric power industry and rewards scientific and technological projects that play an important role in the scientific and technological progress of electric power industry in China, as well as units and individuals that have made important contributions to electric power science and technology progress in China. As the most influential and authoritative award in the field of electric power in China, its first and second prize projects can be directly recommended by the organizer to participate in the competition for national science and technology awards.

The project “Research and Application of Relay Protection Technology to Protect the Safety of New Energy Power Systems”, with Professor Dong Xinzhou from EEA as the first completer and Tsinghua University as the first completing unit, won the first prize of the 2022 Electric Power Science and Technology Award. In addition, EEA won 1 first prize, 2 second prizes, and 4 third prizes.

Professor Lu Chao from EEA won the 2022 “Award for Outstanding Contribution to Electric Power Science and Technology”, and Associate Professor Zhong Haiwang from EEA won the “Award for Outstanding Young Scientists and Technologists in Electric Power”.

The “Electric Power Science and Technology Figure Award”, jointly established by the award establishing unit of the Electric Power Science and Technology Award in 2015, include three sub-awards: “Award for Outstanding Contribution to Electric Power Science and Technology”, “Award for Outstanding Science and Technology Workers in Electric Power” and “Award for Outstanding Young Scientists and Technologists in Electric Power”. This award is granted once a year to recognize engineering technicians and university teachers and students who have made outstanding contributions to scientific and technological research and engineering practice in the electric power field. The winners of this award over the years have become the main force in the scientific and technological development of China’s electric power industry and played an important role in China’s electric power technology innovation.

The teachers of EEA have won the “Award for Outstanding Contribution to Electric Power Science and Technology” for six consecutive years.
