Obituary

  

Professor Lu Qiang, a famous electrical engineering scientist, educator, pioneer and founder of the nonlinear control of modern power systems, former vice chairman of the Central Committee of the China Democratic League, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics of Tsinghua University, died of disease in Beijing on December 23 at the age of 86.

Comrade Lu Qiang was born in Wuhu, Anhui Province on May 19, 1936. He was admitted to the Department of Electrical Engineering of Tsinghua University in 1954. After graduating with a master’s degree in 1964, he stayed at the university to teach. He was elected as a member (academician) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1991. In 2006, he was elected as a foreign academician of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences. He has served as a member of the Standing Committee of the Eighth, Ninth and Tenth National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, and Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the Eighth and Ninth National Democratic League.

Professor Lu Qiang is a famous electrical engineering educator. He devoted his whole life to teaching and educating people and is a great master in the eyes of Tsinghua teachers and students. He has trained more than 100 ph. doctors, masters and post-doctorates and a large number of electrical engineering professionals, including many national leading talents and national model workers. His greatness is as high as mountains and as long as rivers.

Professor Lu Qiang is a world-renowned electrical engineering scientist, educator and the pioneer and founder of the nonlinear control discipline for modern power systems recognized at home and abroad. He has served as the chief scientist of the first 973 project in the energy field of China, and has made pioneering achievement in linear and nonlinear optimal control of power systems, catastrophe prevention of power systems, digital power system and compressed air energy storage, etc., which attracted worldwide attention. He has published a number of Chinese and English monographs which have significant academic impact. He has made indelible contribution to the progress of electrical science and technology and the rapid development of the power industry of China.

Comrade Lu Qiang has won many honours and awards, including the second prize of the National Natural Science Award in 1988 and 2008, the third prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 1990, the first prize of the National Army Science and Technology Progress Award in 2011, the first prize of the National Excellent Science and Technology Book Award in 1982 and the grand prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award in 1997.

Professor Lu Qiang has devoted his life to the development of China electrical engineering education and power system science and technology. His death is a huge loss to Chinas electrical engineering education community and the energy and power industry!
