On the afternoon of November 19, 2020, the fourth lecture of Jingde Tribune, Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Electronics, Tsinghua University, was held in Lecture Hall 217 of the West Main Building. Academician Lu Jianxun, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Alumnus of the EEA, was invited to give a special report entitled "Inheriting the Glorious Tradition of Tsinghua University and Carrying Forward the Scientific Spirit of the Times." Yu Xinjie, Secretary of the CPC Committee of EEA, attended and presided over the Tribune, and more than 100 teachers and students from EEA and other departments listened to the fourth lecture of "Jingde Tribune".
At first, Yu Xinjie, Secretary of the CPC Committee of EEA, described the background and purpose of setting up the "Jingde Tribune" and reviewed the previous three lectures. Then, he introduced Academician Lu Jianxun in detail to the teachers and students present, and the fourth lecture was started.
Academician Lu Jianxun introduced his study experience at Tsinghua University, shared his feelings on personal growth, and combined with his personal experience to talk about the requirements of the times for the students.
I. Study experience
In Tsinghua, we not only have buildings, but more importantly, we also outstanding teachers. Teachers in Tsinghua are famous and strict with students. In Tsinghua University, basic courses have been attached great importance. When my schoolmates and I entered Tsinghua University, we were excited by things in Tsinghua University and did not fully devote ourselves to study. As a result, in the first exam, about half of us failed the exam, and since then no one dared to relax in study. At that time, everyone competed for the seats in the front row in order to listen to the teacher clearly in class. We took notes during the day and reviewed hard at night. The library was brightly lit every evening. After the library was closed and the dormitory lamp was turned off, everyone still went to the boiled water room and studied under the lamp there.
II. Perception on growth
When we study at Tsinghua University, we must be very serious. No matter how we performed at middle school, we are all on the same starting line after entering Tsinghua University. Moreover, we should strive to learn the basic knowledge well, as only by learning the basic knowledge well can we practice, research and innovate, and finally make contributions to the country and society. As stated in the school motto "Self-Discipline and Social Commitment", we should make unremitting efforts to study in our own scientific research career, and when we encounter problems that are difficult to solve, we should think of different ways to solve them, so that we can accomplish arduous tasks. We will always encounter all kinds of failures in scientific research, but as long as we keep working hard in the right direction, we will be able to achieve our goal successfully in the end.
III. Requirements for students in the new era
At the beginning of the founding of New China, the country was poor and blank, and everything was not developed. Even in such conditions, we couldn't rely on others for everything, as that would make us passive and we must develop ourselves. This is how the Chinese work out. Now that our country has formulated the 14th Five-year Plan to realize the two centenary visions, the task of the new era falls on our shoulders, we must contribute our own efforts and strive for the realization of the two centenary goals.
After the end of Academician Lu's report, the students at the scene asked questions enthusiastically, and Academician Lu also made a vivid and comprehensive answer to each question. Academician Lu pointed out that innovation is a very important link in scientific research, but innovation must have solid basic theory and down-to-earth practice, otherwise innovation is a rootless wood and passive water. At the same time, academician Lu also pointed out that the scientific research direction of scientists must be oriented to the needs of the country, and scientific research must be for the service of society.
At the end of the event, Mr. Yu Xinjie, on behalf of EEA, issued a commemorative plaque and certificate of "Jingde Tribune" to Academician Lu Jianxun.
