Abstract:Multi-scale Multi-modal and Multi-spectral Nondestructive Evaluation Sensing and Imaging

Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) techniques are methods used to examine a part of material or structural/mechanical systems locally without impairing their future usefulness. Structural health monitoring (SHM) is a relatively new paradigm (the term SHM became popular after early 2000s) that offers an automated online method for tracking the global health of a structure by combining damage detection algorithms with structural monitoring systems. Both NDE and SHM share common goals in damage identification and data analysis. However, there are several critical gaps to be bridged between conventional NDE and SHM methodologies, which lead to a new paradigm of NDE sensing and imaging.

The research hypothesis of our Lab is that for developing the next generation of NDE solutions we need the integration of advances in modeling of multiscale, multimodal and multispectral sensors, design optimization and new data analytics methods. The next generation NDE research should ensure the safety of complex engineered systems and critical infrastructures, such as aircraft, nuclear reactors, bridges, pipelines and ships that are important for industrial and economic prosperity. Recent work on two of the NDE imaging techniques developed in our lab for critical infrastructure safety and materials evaluation will be discussed. Advanced in composite NDE sensing and imaging will be emphasized in this talk.
