Abstract

Today’s power grids are experiencing a rapidly increasing integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) such as wind and PV, as well as energy storage systems and more-efficient loads. Most DERs, storage systems, and high-efficient loads are interfaced to the grid through power electronics converters. As a result, today’s grid is undergoing a critical change with high penetration of power electronics. Such more-electronics power grids demand the right grid structure and suitable power management and power quality management strategies to ensure high efficiency, reliability and power quality. This talk will focus on the more-electronics power grids to facilitate DER integration. The topics will include hybrid AC/DC microgrids, power converter technologies, and control strategies related to power management and power quality.

Dr. Yunwei (Ryan) Li is currently a Professor with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Alberta, Canada. Dr. Li received the Ph.D. degree from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Dr. Li was a Visiting Scholar with the Aalborg University, Denmark in 2005, and a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Ryerson University, Canada 2006 - 2007. In 2007, he also worked at Rockwell Automation Canada before joined University of Alberta. His research interests include PWM and control of power electronics in distributed generation, microgrid, renewable energy, and electric motor drives. He has produced over 120 top-tier journal papers with over 12,000 citations

Dr. Li is currently Editor-in-Chief for IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics Letters. He previously also served as Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, and IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics. Dr. Li received the Richard M. Bass Outstanding Young Power Electronics Engineer Award from IEEE Power Electronics Society in 2013, and the IEEE Northern Canada Outstanding Engineer Award in 2016.
